Right, if Iroh beat Ozai, even if the nation was officially at peace etc, there would still be the air of “well, of course Ozai could only be beaten by a Fire Nation citizen, and a superior fire bender at that!” Being beaten by the Avatar causes them to be humbled to a degree.
