An episode dealing with a wave of bugs sweeping through could be interesting. Interesting and gross.
I will go out a short limb and say it sucked big time. Cancelled in 3 weeks?
The commercials made it pretty obvious to me what they were going for.
Doubtful. It did really well in the ratings:
And a positive metacritic rating:
I thought it was pretty good. And Forte was good at both the funny parts and the despairing parts. There are definitely things you’ll have to overlook, like where the bodies are and why things aren’t more run down, but I’m mostly able to get past that. Although it was strange to me to see him go to that grocery store, and it looked so nice and orderly and clean, it was like it was just closed the day before, not been a year since everyone died. I would expect a lot of stores to be at least someone looted, or not re-stocked at the very least.
I liked seeing the different ways that Phil and Carol dealt with the death of everyone. They both have valid points of view.
It seemed to be where he was from. And also he went all around on his trip leaving signs saying “Alive in Tucson”, so he had to stay there in case any more people showed up.
Also, the show is made by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, the guys who did Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, The Lego Movie, 21 Jump Street, and 22 Jump Street, which are all pretty great in my opinion. So I’ll definitely keep watching it unless it takes a real nosedive.
Am I the only one that turned up the TV to listen for background sounds? I heard no insects, birds or dogs.
I know. Like everyone else, I have certain triggers which break my suspension of disbelief. Different people, different triggers. I was able to watch the show, but it stayed in the back of my mind, where it took root and spawned a bunch of different questions, especially after the show as over.
I specifically looked for birds and such - didn’t see any.
As I said as a comedy I’m giving it more slack than I would a drama. I also accept that they didn’t need to explain everything in the 1st episode

I thought it was pretty great. I was cracking up at all the right places. Might be my favorite new comedy since Community.
They really should have had flies. Lots and lots of flies.
Made no sense whatsoever. How far can the show go with only two people? What, they’ll have a baby and let hilarity ensue?
Regarding bodies/flies/decomposition etc, I like the idea of it just being a show about what the last person on earth would do (or last couple or last few people). As opposed to how do the last few people on earth deal with the hell that’s left over. They’ve made it out to be a more or less pleasant place to be. No bodies, no bugs, no disease, no one’s sick, they’re not being chased by anyone or anything, they’re just…being. I’m guessing most people have envisioned themselves as being in that scenario at some point or another and I don’t think most people spend their day worry about the bodies or the vultures or the corpse flies. It’s about what you can go and do and get into and have fun with.
Sorry. A swimming pool full of shit is going to attract flies.

Again: autocorrect
Despite its style and production values, this is, at its heart, a sitcom. You really have to give its non-realism a pass. It’s a fantasy-based world.
My wife and I watched the first two last night. Maybe it was due to the low expectation effect(I did NOT think the concept would fly as a sitcom), but we thought the first two were pretty amusing. Several mentions so far that Will Forte is good in it, and he is, but it was a pleasant surprise to see Kristen Schaal turn up as the “last” woman- I like her and think she’s perfect for the role. Yeah, it’s got a slightly hokey “Oddpocalypse Couple” thing going, but it’s miles better than that other Odd Couple show currently on.
I liked it. But I’m a big fan of Will Forte and Kristen Schaal and I like semi-weird humor so I guess it’s right up my alley.
The virus also killed all the saguaro cactus in Tucson. That’s too bad, because the desert around Tucson is really quite unique and would make for a better look than the more generic looking desert we’ve got. (*Show is actually filmed somewhere in the desert in California, not Arizona.)
Just watched the first episode earlier today. Didn’t have high expectations, so I can’t say I was disappointed. It is damn, damn hard to make After The End work as a comedy, and at least one prior attempt (Woops) vanished without a trace after something like 3 episodes.
I’ll admit that there were a few laughs. Not a lot. I’m surprised to say this, but I actually think that it should’ve tried harder. If you have the absolute freedom to indulge all your outrageous fantasies with complete impunity, snagging a bunch of generic porn videos and and smashing up fish tanks (once!) is incredibly tepid. We could’ve spent more time on Phil’s descent into despair. Carol…she alternates between “funny anal” and “irritating anal”, and unfortunately it’s the latter too often. It’s telling how quickly she dropped that don’t-end-a-sentence-with-a-preposition thing (which isn’t actually grammatically incorrect…you all know that, right?), as if the writers were deliberately slamming the brakes on something that had the potential to really, really cheese off a lot of viewers.
This should’ve been a miniseries. With a definite endpoint, they could’ve milked every situation for what it’s worth and avoided ever getting tedious. I am not at all convinced that this will work as a long-running serial.
I’ll give it a couple more weeks.
Exactly. I’ve noticed a lot of people getting on sitcoms backs about continuity or character consistency, forgetting that a few years ago nobody gave a crap about those kinds of things, and the standard writing techniques of sitcoms of yesteryear are still going to be applied when necessary. Sometimes they will do or say something out of character just to sell a punchline, or make the plot work. Cut them some slack.
