Last minute trip--where should I go?

Okay.

This has been a long, grueling, angst-drenched, gray, lonely quarter for me. And the idea of sitting around here over winter break strikes me as the ultimate in awful. (My advisor insists that I should hunker down here in the midwestern slush and sift through the packets and packets of insects in antifreeze that is my research. But I just don’t give a flying forficulid about my thesis at this point. I need to take care of my case of burnout first.)

At the last minute, I got a really good deal on a round-trip ticket to Cancun. I’d be leaving at o-dark-thirty Tuesday morning and not coming back until early January. I snapped that baby right up.

I don’t think I want to stay in Cancun, though. Friends of mine who’ve been to Mexico recommend that I hang out in a place called Isla Mujeres and that, after a few days, I head down to a city called Merida. I’ve heard wonderful things about Merida from people who’ve been there, so I think that’s where I’ll be for most of the time.

So what else should I see or do while I’m in southern Mexico? And where do you recommend I stay? (I’m thinking cheap–like, youth hostel-type cheap.) Any help or suggestions you could give me would be greatly appreciated.

Oh, wait–would this belong more to IMHO than to MPSIMS?
