The reason why we did not answer to that specific issue earlier is because we believed the issue for that specific doper was successfully resolved through other means. Thank you for that xash but as you can see I have finally managed to subscribe. As far as I know I repeated the same steps as previously, but this time it went through. I’ve been trying with one of the major cards here in the UK so I shouldn’t have had a problem. This time I picked a nice quiet time and concentrated hard 
and it was fine.

OK you can see where I live currently - but I’m a Brit retaining British credit/debit cards so no problem here. But our OP may have a point.
Payment process - as far as I understand it it is paypal or plastic. Well here you cannot get plastic. Period. Many people do have it but are either expats or the local rich who have offshore banking, or a second home usually in South Africa or Europe and get a credit card using that address.
Now Luanda is chock full of internet cafes - as is every other big city in the developing world I have visited. So we may be cutting ourselves off from alternative viewpoints from remote parts of the world but frankly they can pop in as guests and if they introduced themselves and their problem they would probably find someone to sponsor them just to be able to say we have a poster in Ruanda or Laos or wherever.
Lack of cash does not have to be the issue - lack of payment method might just be. But marginal I would have thought… still thought I would point it out.
Count me as another non-US subscriber - with the exchange rate as it is, $4.95 is about £2.70 which is only 10p more than a pint of Stella.
I don’t quite see the problem here - I wouldn’t use the Paypal option but I got signed in OK with my debit card - and I’m from Northern Ireland.
Well I’m Sri lankan Canadian, and my parents (native Sri lankans) don’t trust the internet for anything, espescially when it has to do with credit cards. The problem is of course that I’m a teenager so I can’t subscribe myself. Besides i don’t think the Straight Dope will be as good as it used to be after the switch. I can see the Straight Dope losing a lot of its teenage population, and likely a higher percentage of world dopers, other than the developed countries because of the subscription. Bah! I think the subscription is a bad idea! :mad:

I live in the EU (the Netherlands to be exact), am German, married to a Brazilian, and I must say signing up for The Straight Dope was a lot easier than getting the residence visas for my family here.
