And considerably wealthier. And famous. Unlike his character in Last Tango.

No, the movie blew chunks. Next question?
When I saw the movie, I thought he was fat. It was that big coat he wore most of the time. Or maybe the girl was just so damn skinny.
Anyway, why complain? If Brando played convincingly fat when he wasn’t, doesn’t that just prove his remarkable talent?
Jerry: So you didn’t get to see Last Tango in Paris?
George: No…
Jerry: Too bad, it was erotic!
I have never seen the movie but I have heard and read some people say that the story is actually about a gay relationship but the younger character was changed to a woman to make the story an easier sell.
I have a hard time seeing that. It would have been a radical change in the story, essentially turning it into a movie about Paul discovering he was gay rather than a movie about the nature of relationships.
I heard that too a long time ago, but I haven’t been able to find anything that supports this. I thought the story made a bit more sense had the younger character been closeted/suppressed gay though engaged to a woman. The changing nature of his relationship with Paul at the end would have been better motivation to kill Paul than Jeanne’s so-called motivation. As far as Paul goes, Paul seemed self-loathing, and was looking for an anonymous relationship, and this would have fit along those lines. Even if this alternate storyline is not based on anything, I still like it more.
Someone’s reading too much into the butter.
Showed it in our dorm back in the late 70s. Didn’t get much from it then. Maria Schneider was cute. Still keep thinking of John Belushi on SNL in “Dualing Brandos” with “Pass the butter”.
A) It is an art house film, and follows the rule that in any art house film that contains sex/nudity, the story/characters have to be depressing enough to suck all the joy out of it.
B) Also, it’s French!
C) Even if Brando was in reasonable shape back then, Maria Schneider was about the hottest thing on two legs at the time. I don’t know if ANYONE was in her league, certainly, Brando was not even close.
She had legs? Didn’t notice.
Shockingly that doesn’t really apply to Shortbus. Lot of drama, but ultimately most of the characters wind up OK.
Whatever do women see in these millionaires?

You know what they say, “Everything goes better with Blue Bonnet on it.”
…sorry.
