Late Night with Seth Meyers

Last night was his first show. Initial reviews are mixed. How do you rate Seth? I’ll reserve my own views later in the thread.

I liked how they managed to bump the Vice President of the United States to the second slot after Amy Poehler. Not that I mind. Amy is a lot cuter.

I was disappointed in that there seems to be nothing original in Seth’s version of the show; just the same old tried-and-true chat show format. He’s also trying to do Weekend Update-style jokes in the monologue, which isn’t going to work very well.

I really like Seth and all talk shows are pretty horrendous for the first few weeks while they find their niche. (Remember five years ago when everyone was convinced Jimmy Fallon would be a disaster?) It’ll be interesting to see what he comes up with.

He’s still shout-speaking his jokes. Did the mics on Weekend Update not work? These ones do. Stop shouting, Seth.

That’s a good explanation of what I was going to try to say. He’s just not good at stand up. He forces his voice on you, and then seems to stare questioningly like he’s wondering if you’re going to laugh. He doesn’t seem confident. I think he either needs to wrok on his stand up, or get straight to his schtick which is a format better suited to his style.

I couldn’t watch it all. It was just too painful.

I agree, and hope that Meyers will take note of the many people online who are saying something similar.

I like him; I like the interplay with Fred Armisen. The show could turn out well, but clearly it will take some tweaking.

I just watched the first episode last night, and I felt a little uncomfortable for him.

The standup was the weakest part - he didn’t look or sound comfortable; it sounded like he was reading the SNL news while standing up. So the monologue needs to be fixed - either change the format (like, make it a news format?) or adjust the joke delivery.

Once Amy joined him he loosened up and the show was a lot better. His interplay with Fred was also great (I loved the “Recent History” bit of Fred’s, and the faux hostility between Fred and Amy).

I give it a C. I remember Conan O’Brien didn’t start out so hot either, so he may just need more time to get comfortable. He’s eminently likable which should buy him some time.

I voted “Something Else” just so I can complain about being old and my inability to stay up that late.

Having to get up at 5am may have something to do with it.

BTW, I’m obligated to like the show because my next door neighbor is in the band.

So I’m keeping my hopes up.

I liked it. Friedo-There’s only so much variety to the monologue segment. While I agree his monologue is basically Weekend Update during the week, it didn’t bother me nearly as much as you guys.

weekend update with seth meyers is the funniest skit in snl.

i am glad he continues the style in late night monologue.

I stop watching fallon now because he competes with kimmel at 1130.

Kimmel is more entertaining.

so goodbye to fallon and hello to meyers.

in the war of free late night tv. I crown kimmel the winner of 1130 and meyers the winner of 1230.

My enjoyment of these shows is usually more related to the guests than the hosts. At this point I only watch SNL for the musical guest and sometimes hosts. I preferred Conan because of his guests, and then that transferred to Fallon. Not sure if that quality will transfer to Meyers now or not.

I think he’s still obviously quite nervous, and that’s affecting the show. I also think the show needs a while to find its voice.

I’ll be sticking with it.

By the way, wasn’t Jimmy Fallon a nervous wreck when he first took over Late Night?

He was. Those early shows are quite painful to watch. Same thing with Conan’s first year on Late Night as well.

Resurrecting this zombie because it’s been over a year and Seth has not “found his voice.”

I’m off work, awake and watching this and it’s terrible.

I have no idea who the guests are (not that I care anyway) and his comments and quips are rehearsed, projected, predictable, and boring as shit. And he laughs way too much to be credible.

Myers has improved a lot over the first year. He’s much more comfortable on his feet and he has begun to find a voice. Which is smarty pants intelligence, a good contrast to Jimmy Fallon and his smarmy games and goofy grin. His bits almost always center on wordplay; I don’t think I’ve ever seen a late night host talk so much in a bit. That works for me. YMMV.

What’s odd is that now that he finally got to be a decent stand-up, he changed his monolog to the sitting at a desk with over the shoulder graphics of his SNL days. I wonder if he waited until he got good enough so that it wouldn’t feel like defeat.

After Letterman and Ferguson quit, I tried watching Meyers to see if he had gotten anywhere.

Ugh.

This is not the kind of show for this kind of person.

(We’re watching Conan, but only as a fill in. He is at least sometimes funny.)

I find myself laughing out loud at Myers quite often and hardly at all at Fallon.

Fallon’s banter with Higgins sometimes goes on much too long.
