I picked up the new Tool CD Lateralus tonight, having not heard anything from it (not even the “Schism” single), and listened to it once. My thoughts:
-
The packing is beautiful.

The music is good, but so far, after one casual listen, it all sounds like a 79 minute version of “Pushit.” I’m gonna need time to dissect this one.

Hi Opal!
What do you think?
I bought it earlier today and have been listening to it the whole day. I think it is pretty damn good. I don’t know if it is as good as Ænima, but I like it a lot. I’ll agree that it needs time to be dissected. I like the songs “The Grudge”, “Schism”, “Parabola”, Ticks and Leeches", “Triad”, and “Lateralis” the best so far. I really don’t see it as having that many radio singles though. There really is a lot going on in each song. You can tell that Maynard has changed a little because of his A Perfect Circle album.
There is a web site that is coinciding with the cd release. The url is http://www.dissectional.com. It isn’t up as of right now, but it has a message saying it will be up tonight. I have no idea what it is going to be like.
Yep, I just picked it up too. I’m not certain of my opinion of it yet, I’m too busy being disappointed with the weezer album right now. I don’t think I’ll like it as much as aenima, but we’ll see. It does however, have the most uninformative liner notes in history. At least The Toolshed has lyrics up.
Our local radio station played the entire cd last night and I thought it was fantastic. The time signatures are phenomenal they really went all out on this one. There was one song (???) towards the end of the cd that really blew me away with its guitar tone. Definately gonna pick this one up tomorrow on my day off. I didnt really have the time to absorb it that well while here at work.
I had never realized Tools fascination with the occult and magic until I read an article in Modern Drummer magazine that Danny Carey (drummer) talks about Hecates Fountain as the vibe of the band. He also described Tool as a Lunar current band and how his drums absorb the solar current per Kenneth Grants writings.
Ohh well, they rock.
Well, after the 5th listen to the Cd, i must say that it is a freakin masterpiece, no doubt in my mind. I’m not much of hard rock fan to begin, so when a cd comes along that gets me as hooked as i am to Lateralus, it’s gota be a fantastic peice of work. I can’t get Schism out of my head, Grudge blew me away, and the last track gave me some really bad vibes, totally creeped me out. Although it lacks the radio “friendly” vibe of Aenema, it has a very cranial quality, after i listened to the whole cd all the way through the 1st time, i couldn’t wait to listen to it again, but it wasn’t that i was lookin for a specific song or rift, the cd as a whole drew me in. Kinda reminds of The Fragile by NIN, in the way that the quality of the album should be juddged on the whole, rather then the individual songs.
