My first thought was I hope he’s able to still get into UCLA after two years of Daddy’s homeschooling. The kid still has to pass the classes to meet the minimum admittance and it would be both sad and funny if they blew his scholarship and he had to go somewhere else for his year before getting into the NBA.
I stand corrected. Dang, half a million a year for a 38-game season? That is damn good money, and vastly better than what the great majority of college players get (i.e. nothing). You know what, I actually think that would be the best path for him. See the world, learn how to deal with people who are not like him, develop a winning attitude under coaches and owners who don’t take crap from foreigners, and make a good living without being able to afford excesses like a McMansion or a fleet of Ferraris he can’t drive or a dogfighting ring.
These two clowns (dad and son) didn’t do so well when they made a paid appearance on WWE TV. It was a trainwreck, went off-script, the kid used a slur on a live mic and then, afterwards, they simply left instead of doing what was supposed to be a second, backstage appearance.
Made no friends, pissed off a lot of wrestlers with their arrogant and disrespectful attitude, forced WWE to apologize for the on-air slur and they have a near zero chance of ever being invited back.
A co-worker of mine played college basketball and was hoping to get into foreign leagues (okay, his fantasy was do those a couple of years, make it big there, then comeback to the US as a superstar) and apparently the game is very different - much less physical and aggressive and the biggest basketball stars there rank like a famous poet over here, socially.
If you have a reasonable shot at making millions at 19 take it. Colleges don’t shut their doors to 20 year olds. You can always go back. I know one NBA player (not going to mention names) who left college after his first year to a big contract. He is very smart and has ambitions outside of the sport but he knows he needs to cash in now.
