Well, I am going to zombify this thread as it is the right time of the year for these convesations to take place.
I am now in my new house and my lawn needs some work. The sod was laid last August or September but I didn’t move in until March. When I went into the back yard there were some incredibly large weeds waiting for me. I pulled lots of them and left holes in the yard that are pretty big, due to the size of the roots.
About 3 weeks ago I put down some fertalizer, this stuff, and I didn’t really notice any difference. This weekend I think I may put down some of the companion product, seen here.
The lawn has some spots that look perfect. The colour is deep and rich and those patches seem to grow faster than the less than perfect areas. There are some places where it is pretty obvious that a herbicide was used because the grass is dead and not just brown. The area that I live in is a new development and I am one of only two houses that I know of with Bermuda grass. Everyone else has the St. Augustine. One guy, down the street, has drainage issues on his lot, and had to move a tree. He used some of that dirt as a top dressing and it really seems to have helped the green-up of his lawn. I am thinking about getting in a 1.5 -2 yards of soil to top dress my lawn -also to even out the dips and divots in the back yard. It was mentioned earlier that aeration should be done in the fall, but could I do it now before top dressing? Also, the weeds are a bit of a concern to me and I don’t know if I should leave them and hope for a healthy lawn to crowd them out or should I use a chemical weed killer and stem the problem now.
