Learning curve in Word

When I type my first name and the first letter of my last name in Word, it offers my full last name as an auto-fill option.

How many times do you need to type a word or phrase for Word to learn it?

Did it pick it up from your initial set-up of the program where you can enter your name, company, etc.? I’ve never had Word learn to auto-complete my name (unless I deliberately added it). I’ve used Word for about 14 years now.

:smack:

Yeah, I’m “the user” on this, so that must be it.

nevermind

Are you looking to have Word automatically complete your name somehow? I’m not totally familiar with the feature (AutoText, right?), but as best as I can discover in my references, you have to hit Enter to complete it.

I can’t picture how having Word automatically fill out, say, “John S” to “John Smith” would be productive. (Is it case sensitive? If not, imagine writing a story and having to go back and fix every attempt at typing “John said,” “John stood up,” etc. and even if it is, anytime you wanted to type “John Schmidt,” “John Sebastian,” etc., you’d have to go back and fix it. Yucko.)

You can use AutoCorrect, though. I haven’t used it for a while, but I used to use it for author queries I used a lot; for example, “qq404” [space] would expand to “This URL returned a “Page not found” error; please resolve.” The code has to be something you wouldn’t normally type in regular text (hence the “qq” for “query”, and it kept all my queries together in the list).

So if you want an Autocorrect for your name, you could do “//j” (followed by [space]) to expand to “John Q. Smith.”

Scarlett – yes, this is the “hit enter” function, not an actual auto-complete. And it’s not a problem, I was just curious how it was recognizing my name.

Yes, it is from your user name. It’ll also autocorrect (or autotext) your company name if it’s in there.

Word has a lot of autocorrect stuff preprogrammed – usually common misspellings. It also has a lot of autotext preprogrammed – some commonly used words and phrases.

You can add to both your autocorrect and autotext list as much as you want. This feature comes in really handy when you have a lot of frequently used elements, such as a long company name that can never be abbreviated (set an autocorrect to correct the inititials to the full name) or a hunk of standard text or content (set autotext to fill in the rest when you start typing the phrase).

I use autotext for some tables we use a lot. You can also add autotext entries to your toolbar.

I think it’s one of Word’s most useful features.
