Leather v. Calcium Chloride

Living in the Midwest, I have long been familiar with alternatives to Halite for melting ice which forms on a driveway/walkway during winter. I have only recently discovered that some of those alternative materials (of which Calcium Chloride pellets is one) have an adverse effect on leather. Why is it that those pellets will cause leather gloves or a jacket to shrink? Which salt alternatives will have such an effect and which will not? Is there anything that can be done to rehabilitate the leather after it happens? Any help is appreciated. Thanks.
