Leftovers - wrap or no?

I like everything to be sealed in lidded plastic containers, zipped into bags, or covered in plastic or foil. Seems to me to be the best way to preserve freshness, moistness, flavor, whatever. Yet I’ve seen refrigerators housing naked food!!!

Do you wrap?

Generally and for the most part, yes. (I have been known to leave leftover slices of pizza unwrapped on the plate, because I know they will be eaten for breakfast.)

I recently discovered those little shower-cap-for-your-bowl things. They are wonderful. I can pop one onto a dish of leftovers and not have to dirty a separate container. They can be washed and reused, so they are better than foil/plastic wrap.

Absolutely. Either plastic or glass containers with lids, sometimes a ziploc bag.

FCM, have you ever eaten naked food at someone’s house? I have, and it tasted like, well, everything in the fridge. Plus, uncovered or unwrapped food dries out quicker. Yuck.

Hey, Uncovered-Food People, it’s called “plastic wrap”, or a “lid”. They are your friends. Use them.

Generally, yes, although I have been known to simply place the lid on a pot and stick it in the fridge when I’m too damn tired to pull out the Tupperware.

Love the shower caps for your food – I use them all the time!

Concur with all above.

Anyone who leaves naked food in the fridge ends up with a VERY smelly fridge. We have this problem at work. Everything ends up tasting like relish :frowning:

I’m paranoid about food poisoning, so yeah, I always wrap or put leftovers in containers. I also don’t let food sit out after I’ve cooked (on the rare times I do cook), almost as soon as I’ve served, I’m putting it away. I also keep my fridge very very cold.

My mother-in-law does this all the time - nothing like a partially dried-out custard pie… ick I’m not even going to try to address former roomies from years gone by…

The only thing I ever put into the fridge “naked” is fresh, uncut fruits and vegetables. I’ve got this totally superstitious and untested hypothesis that “naked” produce keeps longer than produce in bags, because, while naked produce will dry out quicker, it doesn’t go as spectacularly and disgustingly bad as produce in a bag where the moisture evaporating off the produce can collect and pools.

I keep 'em in the crisper drawers, though, to minimize smell/taste absorbtion.

I cover most everything I put in the fridge, with the exception of fresh, uncut veggies/fruits (because naked produce really does seem to keep longer, as mentioned by Podkayne).

The only exceptions to this are cut cucumbers, which seem to turn mushy much faster if I wrap them. I also like to keep my cut bell peppers unwrapped, but that will flavor the milk and butter, so I try to avoid it since my SO notices sometimes that his Kraft Macaroni and Cheese tastes like peppers due to the currupted milk and butter.
Oh - and I leave cut citrus unwrapped, because I like the way it makes the fridge smell.

Actually, I do a quick calculation.

Is the wrapper worth more than the food? Not if it’s a 10-cent zip bag for 10 cents worth of lettuce.

Is it worth the time to wrap with saran if I’m planning to eat it before it changes color/texture/flavor?

Can I just put an upside down tupperware bowl over my plate and let it go at that?

And so on.

So, no, I never wrap ever.

If Mr. Cranky and I ever divorce, I suspect it may be over this issue.

I hate when he puts open cans of peaches in the fridge.

I’m sorry, I must go seethe now.
