I’ve played Soul Reaver 2 (great story and graphics) and am currently in Blood Omen 2, which is fun, yet disturbing and satisfyingly violent(I’m evil fighting evil, hooray!). I was curious what you other Dopers thought about this series and if I should seek out the other games (am I right in assuming there’s only 2 others?)
I’ve only played Soul Reavers I and II. SR1 I liked okay, enough to buy SR2 when it came out. I played SR2 to the end, but lord did I find it to be not fun. It’s cutscene galore. If you want to make an anime, make an anime, but having me fight pointless battles against the same three monsters over and over between scenes doesn’t make it a game.
Towards the end I was literally letting the cutscenes steer me. If I went more than three minutes without a long-ass cutscene (in which the characters say the exact same things they did in the last cutscene, over and over) I assumed I was on the wrong track.
I guess I’m not a fan.
True, there were cutscenes galore in SR2, but liked the story.
What I meant to say was…I liked the story.
I played quite a bit of the first Kain game when it came out (the top down rpg). Soul Reaver 1 just kinda struck me as Tomb Raider with bats. I enjoyed it, up to a point, but eventually I wandered off to greener pastures.
Haven’t tried the 2nd yet.
To be fair, I started playing after I became disenchanted with all things Gothic and Scary, so my opinion is heavily biased against all things vampiric.
The first two are definately worth it if you’re enjoying the storyline of the second two.
I’ve only played the first game, and enjoyed it quite a bit–and I was very much not a vampire fan even then. Should still be copies, for both playstation and PC, floating around the bargain bins if you look.
