Legal question for massaging

So I’m a college student who has been told I’m very good with my hands and massaging people. And I’m considering trying to sell massages to people at school but since I’m not trained in Physical Therapy and such I wanted to see if anyone had knowledge of what I would need to do to protect myself from lawsuits or anything.

I mean it’s not going to be a big business or anything, but if I massage someone and they get hurt what am I looking at? How can I prevent being sued and such?

My thinking is I’ll have to be pretty formal about it and make sure I tell everyone up front and am very clear that I am not a licensed practicioner, perhaps even get a paper written up for them to sign.

But what do those who know infinitely more than I know suggest?

American massage Therapy Association, Georgia chapter. I suggest you check the laws in your county and city to see what they say about performing massage for money. An attorney licensed on your jurisdiction will be better able to help you with liability issues relating to massage injuries.

A friend of mine is currently taking classes to become a ‘Certified Massage Technican’. Following the class, which seems to be taking a year, or more, he can apply for a license in the State of Colorado.

I notice a lot of massage ads in the papers for people with CMT following their names.

Whether, or not, you can set your self up to do massages without a license would depend on the laws in your location. If no license is required there, I’d get your clients to sign some sort of waiver, although this might not be enough in all cases and IANAL.
