Legalities involved for Canadians getting married in the U.S.?

We’re Canadian (live in B.C.) and we’re planning a trip to Vegas this spring and of course everyone is teasing us about getting married while we’re there.

Which got us wondering, if someone ever DID want to get married in the States instead of at home, would the marriage be legal? Would special steps have to be taken for the marriage to be recognized in Canada?

Of course I could always phone our government agent’s office, but then I’d be on hold forever, and besides, the Straight Dope is just WAY more fun!
