Legit Places to Donate Baby Clothes for Katrina?

I tried Red Cross, but they only want cash. Anyone know where I could send/donate a goodly amount of clothing (baby, women’s and men’s) clothing for hurricane Katrina? If there isn’t one, I’ll donate locally to Goodwill or something, but there are a lot of nekkid babies on tv, and I’d like to toss some stuff their way (plus some diapers, wipes, formula, etc)

Maybe Salvation Army?

This may be useful.

Just about every charity supporting NO is saying that cash is the most effective way to help. When goods are donated, it requires a lot of infrastructure and overhead to sort it out, transport it, figure out how to get it where it’s needed, etc. It might become more expensive to deal with a donation than the donated item would cost to go out and buy locally. I think the most pressing needs are food & clean water.

I was surprised to learn that most donated clothing does not even go to people who need clothing. It is usually sold off to exporters who send it to foreign countries to be sold to the public. There is quite a market for used US clothing abroad.

I sympathize with your desire to help the HK victims but if you want to donate goods directly to someone who needs it you might try a local homeless shelter.

contact your area churches and other local organizations, which may have “donation station” information and lists of items needed. if they’re anything like the mine in my cmty, clothes and the other items you mentioned are definitely desired!
