Well, I guess it’s because he’s not a jerk (he may be many things but I’ve never seen him be particularly jerkish). Also, he is his own worst enemy, anyone reading his debates with half a brain can see that his opinions are severely flawed. Those who can’t see that are probably too far gone down the path of unenlightenment to worry about.
Doc Cathode, on the other hand, is a real gem.
Of course, SimonX, myself and others have been trying to get the terms “to Lekatt” or “Lekatting” to take off , but with little success so far.
Personally I think Lekatt’s efforts are so above and beyond the call of ordinary kookiness that I think he deserves to have an SDMB in-joke named after him, but it remains up to you, dear dopers, to decide in the court of popular usage whether that occurs.
Well, yes, but eventually the sheer waste of bandwidth becomes more than a little grating.
I find him quite amusing. I also find him to be a little pathetic and sad.

Wow, you’ve just made me realize that I have no idea what to call more than one Publius. I’ve always assumed I was the only one. Frankly, the idea that there’s more than one of me out there is a pretty scary thought.

Part of the problem is that he’ll jump into a perfectly nice thread and pull out his old, tired and repeatedly debunked claim that life after death has been proven in controlled scientific studies. Every single time this happens someone has to do the routine boring debunking all over again, lest a new poster see it and not recognize it for the blivvit it is. Waste of bandwidth, waste of energy, source of frustration.
I say toss him. He’s provided all the entertainment value he ever will.

I think the last item is pretty close. He is a pathetic attention whore dying for attention and the chance to witness for his kooky beliefs on the off-chance it may validated his shallow existance. No matter how many times he is caught posting lies he will continue. Sadly, pitting him seems to do no good. In fact, he probably loves the attention.
I don’t really disagree with your ultimate conclusion but I don’t think that Lekatt is a troll. I don’t think he is deliberately spreading ignorance. I think he believes the dribble that he types.

Lots of people believe the dribble they type. Some of that dribble is founded in ignorance and can be, and should be IMHO, fought. Some people refuse to listen and re-evaluate the basis of their dribble. At this point it becomes willful ignorance. My dear friend lekatt has been a bastion of willful ignorance for a very long time now. While I don’t advocate banning the ignorant, I’m much less sure about the willfully ignorant.

I agree with Princhester, which is why I’m so patient with him. He’s ignorance, we fight it. Slooooowwwly.
Mtgman- I almost used the phrase “willful ignorance”. Yes Lekatt believes what he types. I never questioned that. It’s his refusal to answer questions, his continuing use of strawmen, posts that contradict other posts, his repeated postings of claims shown to be false, and his debating stance of sticking his fingers in his ears and chanting “La la la la la! I’m not listening!”
I remember a poster ( OTOMH BZ000) who asked how much energy you would need to make the earth rotate backwards and thus reverse time-just like in Superman.
Various posters attempted to educate BZ on basic physics. One Doper even suggested a book. He said that if BZ would read it, he would be happy to answer any questions BZ had. A new thread was started. BZ had bought the book, he posted genuine questions and various Dopers provided facts and answers.(IIRC he ended getting banned quickly, though I can’t recall why)
His first post showed no knowledge of physics. But after his error was explained to him, he made a genuine effort to learn.
Lekatt, OTOH, continues to repeat the same debunked claims he made in his first thread. He continues to attack the same straw men. He continues to show the same deliberate close-mindedness.
I’d be surprised if Lekatt had left already.
