Not really inspired by the Willie Nelson thread, since I’ve been meaning to ask this for a while and just never got around to it.
So we know that Motorhead is one of the Best. Bands. Evar., and Lemmy was also the bass player for Hawkwind when they were at their best, but how are his skills as a bassist regarded?
Lemmy’s bass skills are hard to qualify. Technically, he is not very flashy or innvative or complicated, but he has great tone, aggression and groove, His sound is very distinctive. He can play a few licks or ramp up an intro and you know it’s him. It wouldn’t sound like Motorhead without Lemmy’s bass.
I guess you can say that his bass playing is kind of like his singing. It’s raw, untrained, harsh and aggressive but it’s also somehow unique and great and definitive of the band.
I totally expected this to be about fishing. I’ve no idea why, since I know who Lemmy is and don’t go bass fishing all that much. I just thought, “Wow! Bass fishing and music? Total renaissance man!”
