Leno/Conan Shakeup at NBC

Uhh, that’s exactly it. Jay Leno’s back on The Tonight Show at 11:35, according to reports.

The link says Conan is out. If that’s true and they are firing him, they are going to owe him the $60 million stipulated by the contract…

Oh. I feel a little dumb, right now.

Whoops , I was wrong, it says Conan is out.

I guess they better pay $60 mil or else have really good lawyers

Nah, I was just being unnecessarily flippant  There could have been more to the story, there just wasn’t.

I’m sorry. There was really somebody in the universe who didn’t expect this outcome given the past few days?

Bill Simmons from ESPN (and former writer for Jimmy Kimmel) tweets: “FYI: Next week is Conan’s final week hosting the Tonight Show. His staff is trying to book big guests so he goes out with a bang. It’s true.”

Cheaper to pay him than loose another 200 million in 7 months. My guess is that Conan will negotiate a release from his contract for a much reduced rate in order to go over to Fox.

Somebody had to go and Conan wasn’t doing well in an established time slot. He would be better off as a single late night act on another network with no other talk shows.

Yeah, me. I was absolutely convinced when the dust settled, Conan would have the Tonight Show and Leno would be out.

I’m going to cling to a shred of hope that since only TMZ has this story so far, they could be wrong, or at least premature.

Considering TMZ’s track record, I think your shred of hope is pretty thin.

TMZ has great sources , they broke Michael Jackson was dead. Not sure how often they get stuff wrong.

This is a super big risk for NBC , now Leno has to compete against Letterman and Conan.

This is probably their logic, but it’s based on the idea that Conan on the Tonight Show will just inherently get the ratings he’s getting now. There are lots of things that argue against that. When Leno took over the Tonight Show, it took a while for his ratings to come up, so one might expect Conan to follow a similar path. Also, probably part of the issue with Conan’s show is Leno’s show at 10, and how the network has promoted the two shows.

At first I thought it was just wishful thinking on my part, but for a moment it sounded like Leno was actually going to be an adult here and refuse to steal back Conan’s show. Guess not.

So I guess his statements about not wanting to cause any more problems with any more hosts when he agreed to retire were just talking out of his ass?

This is going to cause a HUGE backlash among Conan’s fans. The problem here is that his fans never seem to get taken seriously by anyone, so will anyone who matters (NBC, advertisers, etc) care?

Now I need Tina Fey to walk away from NBC so that I can 100% stop watching the network.

so Jay said he’d walk too so he can look like he didn’t muscle in on Conan’s Tonight Show.

And now the reports are that Jay will be taking over the Tonight Show and Conan is out on the street. Seems like Jay is the douche here, trying to act all nice when in fact he’s the one doing the sleazeball moves when saying one thing and doing the other.

I hope Jay falls flat with his new Tonight Show. I hope Conan restores his cred at another network and screw NBC further.

Thanks. I knew it had to be already posted somewhere. Well, I guess we see now how true that was. Way to go, Leno. You’re a class act.

I bet Leno’s poison now - he’s going to have a helluva time getting guests. Some will be forced by their agents/the contracts in their movies, but stars with any leverage are going to avoid the Tonight Show.

he’s got Jerry Seinfeld on his side. Perhaps Jerry can get him the guests he needs. I lost a lot of respect for Seinfeld when he basically said Conan had the chance to do his thing and blamed Conan for sucking. Please, conan wouldn’t suck so bad if Jay left completely and he had a better 10pm lead in than the stupidest variety comedy show that was called the jay leno show.

Yeah, I saw Seinfeld’s response. Still, the fact that some celebrities are publicly on Conan’s side does not bode well for Leno.

I am so certain that this isn’t true, that I am willing to place a wager.

Name any big name star you choose, and we will bet 20 dollars on it. We can set up time limits or…something. I’m certain you are wrong.
