Yes - and the letter itself is called “veta” these days AFAIK. Similarly with d which is now called “thelta” (voiced th), and similarly, if you actually want a d sound you have to spell it nt. When I was in Lindos in '92 and asked the way to the Hotel Dionysius, I got a puzzled look and the eventual realization that I was trying to find the-ON-e-soss. (The glass of orange juice I had when I got there made up for any amount of mild embarassment, mind you.)
Y’know, I was aware that the Greeks also have a huge hangup over sole exclusive ownership of the name of Macedonia, but at least that one is country-to-country (though still supremely silly). This one is a mere island province against the evolution of every other Western language.
The Athens, Georgia, USA city council and the management of the Michigan State University Spartans may have to watch out for a letter from the Greek consulate soon…
