I am reading a book about Shamyl the Avar, a Imam from Daghestan in the Caucasus mountains, who led a twenty year battle against the Russian army in the early 1800’s. He was able to unite warring moslem tribes together under ‘shariat law’ to fight off the imperialistic advances of “Holy Mother Russia”.
