The problem is that the people claiming to be conservatives are mostly republicans. They cannot by any useful definition of the word be called “conservative”.
They claim to have all kinds of ideas: “personal responsibility” (Trump: “I’m not responsible at all”) “Family values” (their leader is divorced and pays porn stars hush money from the campaign fund) “Fiscally conservative” (EVERY recent Republican President runs up a huge deficit) “Compassionate” (cheering putting kids in cages). Self-professed conservatives claim to hold these kinds of values, then turn around and vote for people who have none of them.
If someone thinks they are conservative and didn’t vote for Biden. (who is more conservative that anyone (R)) They are lying to themselves. They are racist, Homophobes, Transphobes, anti-immigration (how can someone in America say they are conservative AND be anti-immigration??) and they don’t give a shit about any of the other stuff. They are voting for people who they hope will hurt the other.
Then when called on this inconsistency they lie, lie, lie and lie some more. Recently whole new disingenuous ways to debate have been invented to not have discuss the cognitive dissonance of “Conservatives” voting (R). Whataboutism has been elevated to an artform. Every fact will be twisted to fit their narrative – is there any subject where Republicans are accepting scientific consensus? Economics/Climate/Epidemiology/Weather(remember that guy with the sharpy–changing the weather forecast to fit his narative).
People who have such cognitive dissonance to explain their own position to themselves cannot usefully participate in debate. They have such a tentative relation to the truth, scientific consensus, logic or common sense that they cannot recognize a superior argument even if dropped from great height. This makes it completely impossible to debate anything with them.
