The truth is, the internet is not a safe place, and neither is the SDMB. Especially not the SDMB (see The Pit). Any message board is going to have a wide variety of members with all different degrees of support for different causes. There are people on all sides of the discussion. If a subset of the people saying harsh things causes someone to leave, then truthfully, the SDMB is probably not the place for them. The discussions we have about any kind of social, political, or racial issue will often be very contentious. It’s very likely that some people in the thread will say things that might seem offensive, but many people in the thread will also say things which are not. If someone can get so offended by what one person says and ignore what other people are saying, then they probably won’t enjoy hanging around here no matter what is being discussed.
Getting back to the OP, there are boards which are completely liberal. So rather than saying that the conservatives should be booted from the SDMB, the people who find conservatives offensive could go to the boards which are only for liberals. Then they could have the one-sided, non-controversial discussion with just liberals and not deal with the conservatives being contentious.

Question for you - given that vaccine refusal in the U.S. is highest among black populations, do you think that:
*The reasons for vaccine ignorance might not be exclusively due to people pledging loyalty to “conservative” politicians or ideas?
*The rhetoric around race in the elite spaces that influence policy over the past 2-3 years, which makes it impossible to attribute any negative behavior or mores to any black American no matter what they say or do, has directly led to an increase in black people suffering consequences from covid up to and including death, and to the general failure to bring the pandemic below herd immunity levels?
