Let Me Give You a Hand! - Hand Transplant Recipient

I wouldn’t call this really mundane, but I find this so fascinating.

We have our thirteenth hand transplant recipient and she’s doing fantastic!

Hand transplant recipient Emily Fennell shows off her new hand in UCLA video - With video (not graphic)

Emily is 26, lost her hand years ago in car accident. UCLA did a transplant and she’s already using the hand to pick up objects, stack them, etc.

It’s amazing how they do this. They use a curved incision instead of snapping it on like a bracelet, connect the nerves, tendons and muscles. (How they connect nerves is something I’ll never understand.)

The nerves are growing at 1 millimeter per day. It will take months of therapy and possibly lifelong immunosuppressants, but it’s working and damn, it looks like a very close match.

Kudos to the surgeons and best to Emily. Hope you enjoy this too.

Gives a whole new meaning to the phrase “I got her digits”.
mmm

Let’s have a big hand for the little lady.

Regards,
Shodan

I had a hand and it went…good?

That’s amazing.

I wonder how that guy with the face transplant is doing? I’m wondering how these kinds of transplants fare after months and years.

I saw him playing hockey. There was a face off in the corner.
mmm

Looking good. I see him around every now and then. I remember the day it was done. The doctor that I work for told me about it and was absolutely thrilled.
