Actually, ‘Ruadh’ is the noun form of ‘red’, where one might think that the adjective form ‘Dearg’ might better fit a nickname.

Before I run too far I should probably explain my own name again, if only to try to ward off any more hysterically funny outbursts:
The first employee I ever hired (now a partner in the firm), tagged me with the nickname ‘Dr. Watson’, for reasons known only to herself. For some reason the nickname stuck, and I actually get mail addressed to Dr. Watson at my office.
About a year ago I met someone who has become quite special to me, and in what can only be called a cosmic accident her name IRL turned out to be ‘Crick’. A man can hardly turn his back on a fate what displays that kind of sense of humor.

erm… wrong. Both words are adjectives (what exactly would “the noun form of red” be anyway? In English, I mean).
“ruadh” most commonly means red-haired (“dearg” cannot be used to describe hair color), but it also is used for example in the Red Sea (an Mhuir Ruadh).
It’s now just “rua” in Irish BTW, I use the Scots Gaelic (and older Irish) spelling.

The noun form in English would be a given name, Red Buttons, fer example, or the Red Sea (called red, but not actually ‘red’ in the sense of the adjective).
Mainly I was just makin’ an obscure joke at yer expense, for which I apologize. (‘Dearg’ actually is the proper Gaelic adjective for red, and ‘Ruadh’, as ye say, is taken as ‘red-haired’, but the familiar slang usage of the word ‘Dearg’ is more to mean ‘utter’, you see.)

(Sigh) I thought I was pretty subtle about the whole thing, inviting the gentle reader to work through the whole, ‘Red’ modifies ‘Sea’ as ‘Atlantic’ modifies ‘Ocean’. . . QED process, without any loss of face. Now ye’ve gone and dumped me right in it. (Insert smilie of choice here)
In ruadh’s defense though, Gaelic is a purely irrational language, and suspends the rules of structural semantics on the end of a yo-yo dangled from a cliff of crumbling meanings. Various words, phrases, and usages change drastically from area to area, and it would be pedantic and niggling in the extreme to continue this hijack any further.

You can say that again (but don’t). I am glad to learn the meaning of “ruadh”. I have a song by Mary Black called Carolina Ruadh, which I now figure means the redheaded Carolina. I’ve always wondered about that.
Trumpy303, I know what your handle means because I remember you explaining it once. As an avid fan of your source, I probably could have guessed the Trumpy part, but the 303 would have been a bit too arcane for me.
As for Tengu, I vaguely remember that from Japanese fairy tales. Is it some kind of monster?
Wasn’t Ruffian a thoroughbred filly who won a lot of stakes races (and money) in her day? Don’t remember what day that was, though.
