Explain your user name please!

I looked for a thread and found this old one
http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?t=158404&highlight=explain+username

I hope I haven’t over looked a recent one.

Anyway mine (as I’ve explained once or twice on unrelated threads) means ‘The Thief’ in Irish. It is pronounced “on gawdee”.

Please explain yours to me.

Nothing too complicated or intellectual about mine.

I love to sing–and I’m told I’m not bad at it–so I called myself Chanteuse!

PS–pronounced Shahn-TOOZ!

I think mine is pretty self-explanatory. I’m a Mom from West Virginia.

Mine is a take-off on Surabaya Sue, a fascinating if somewhat bizarre Scotswoman who lived an unusual life in Bali and was imprisoned by the Japanese during WWII. I have close ties to Indonesia although I live in Cairo, so the name resonates with me, even if it is obscure to everyone else.

Just something random I thought up. Sometimes, I have these random brainstorms, and my user name came out of one of them.

Crotalus is the name of the genus which includes most rattlesnakes, and I like rattlesnakes.

I believe mine is fairly obvious.

Wheeljack was my favorite Transformer. The show ended for me when they killed him in the movie.

When I signed up I was feeling rather lazy when I signed on, so I went to my bookshelf and picked a book at random and used the main character from it.

That book was The Man Who Never Missed by Steve Perry.

pbbth (the sound you make when you blow a raspberry) actually came from a group excersize in theater class in my high school where a bunch of us were sitting around answering questions out of a book. The question that came up for a friend of mine was, “If you had to rename everyone sitting with you in this room right now what would you name them and why?” He then proceeded to give everyone a strange noise for a name because he thought it would be awesome to yell that across the room and actually have people respond. These hilarious sound related names kind of stuck, and pbbth is the name he assigned to me.

Seems appropriate to follow Crotalus. With permission of Tuba Diva, I ran a thread/poll to pick my new username and took the top 10 entries and let the SDMB vote on it.

Crotalus suggested “What Exit?” and it (more or less) won the poll. It is an old joke about people from Jersey. Everyone in Jersey is supposed to live near a highway exit. I like this joke because of a mildly amusing anecdote from when I went to boot camp. One of the other recruits was being a wiseass when he heard I was from Jersey and said, “So what exit to you live by?”
I had never heard the joke before and so I answered, “Well I live between 105 and 109, why do you know the area?”
His jaw and several others dropped and then they explained to me that the question was meant to be just a joke.

So, my username is a joke that identifies that I am from Jersey.

Actually, I am oblivious to the meaning, is it just a play on Arcane?

 You really should have put that in a spoiler box. I haven’t seen the movie yet.

My username comes from the fact that I’m learning to design and build solar-heated and -powered houses. Let the sun shine in, and you don’t need a furnace, even in Canada!

GSP, exit zero. I once lived there.

“phouka” is an archaic variant of “puck,” a fairy tale trickster. In my favorite Shakespearean play, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, the puck is named Robin Goodfellow. Robin is my IRL name. phouka also shows up in Emma Bull’s War for the Oaks, one of my favorite novels, and in the Jimmy Stewart movie Harvey.

One more recent, but I don’t mind reexplaining mine.

I picked mine because, at the time I signed up, I really liked the song “Superman” and the name of the band who sang it. I had no idea it referred to a penalty call in hockey for aggressive behavior and just thought it was a really creative combination of words put together by the band.

I found out the truth later and, since I have, I realize it is kind of appropriate in another way.

Being the misanthrope that I am, I constantly (untentionally) behave in ways that cause me to be on someone’s shit list for brief periods of time or for them to be on the outs with me temporarily.

Mighty Mighty…

Sure it’s dated, but I’ve been using it online for a long time. Made for a good gaming handle, and since then it’s stuck.

Much like Captain Socks, I thought up mine randomly.

sighs enviously – just got back from my annual week there.

I’m a tricky character who loves her some Looney Tunes.

Thanks! Being something of a Gaeliphile (Celtophile?), I have been (slowly) trying to learn Irish Gaelic. I wondered what your name meant, as it looks like An gardai (sorry, can’t find the stupid code for the accent mark) – which is police. Funny that those words would be so similar.

As for my name – it is my Runescape character’s name. I wanted something that would be a bit tongue-in-cheek funny without being completely vulgar. It actually sounds a bit like a real name and only really looks dirty when written

Nothing particularly exciting about mine. I originally came up with it in '98 when I was brainstorming for a new band name. I had originally come up with Sync, but a web search revealed there were already two bands with that name in existence, so I eventually settled on Mindfield. (Not after the Prodigy song Mindfields which I didn’t know of at the time had come out a year earlier. I just thought it sounded cool.) I used it as an alias, but never published any music seriously under it, and there have since been at least two or three bands pop up with this name. I’ve retained it as a username though, and have renamed my band to Psychopusher (The “psycho” part a reference to psychoacoustics) which has no presence on the web. I’ve kept the Mindfield alias more out of tradition and because it’s what everyone who knows me recognizes me as.
