What's Your Username Mean?

Mine is my actual IRL name.

Be prepared, Topaz. You will most likely be the recipient of numerous “This has already been done” posts, some with links.

Doesn’t bother me, though, because there are always new members who haven’t seen the old threads and have intersting, confusing, or obscure usernames. As for me, see the sig.

Oh, and welcome to SDMB!

Lol, thanks, Davebear.

I am NardoPolo, the world’s greatest marble player. And this is how it all began.

Nardo is the name of a character in 2NU’s music from the (gasp) late 80’s and early 90’s. Very bizarre musical stories. Their one song, “This is Ponderous”, was in the top 40’s for a few weeks, but thats as good a ratings as 2NU ever received. Its opening line was: “I had this dream the other night. I went to work, and no one remembered who I was. So, I decided to take the day off.”

Their latest albums have begun to embellish on Nardo’s quest for the Coolest Place on Earth™.

I love the music so much, and the character of Nardo, that I’m more than happy to have my very online existence be reduced to a shameless plug…

Hi Topaz
Lovely name.
I’m a new member, obviously, and i hope people will answer you thread.

As to my user name, not very hard to figure out – I like poetry and black turtlenecks

I haven’t answered one of these yet.

Severian

In the language of the French (yes, I know they are unpopular at the moment):

Mange = eat
Tout = everything
(which can almost be truly said of me)

Yes, it does look like Man Get Out, but it isn’t, really.

Neither is it Magnet out, or Mange Trout, honestly.

Thanks, ** BeatGirl , and yes, ** Mangetout, I did think it was ** Man Get Out**

I was just wondering if this thread had been done! I wanted to use “something clever” but alas, it was taken (so I am not as clever as I had hoped). So I am using one of my middle names (I have two), I used to hate it because an x once told me “Margo is a fat girl’s name”…this from a man named Daniel Fred (said in a Vermont accent sounds like Daniel Frad). I hope people post to this, I am curious about so many names.
Margo

Mangetout, I feel oddly intelligent. I always read it the way it’s supposed to be read, not “Man get out.” Although, isn’t mangetout a variety of green bean?

As for my username, it’s completely random. IRL, I don’t have a real name, I have a multitude of nicknames, of which “Raven” is one. So I guess that’s it.

Or, it could be construed that he’s an advocate of canine skin disease, Mange tout.

Anyway, I haven’t done one of these for my new name. My old name wasMjollnir, suggested from

a) Greg “The Hammer” Valentine, son of the late great Johnny Valentine (whose own blows were called “sledge hammers”)
b) Led Zeppelin documentary “Hammer of the Gods”
c) I was a big “Thor” comics fan when I was a kid–that was one MF of a weapon.

My current name is the name of an obscure dancer I saw in a documentary called That’s Black Entertainment. You’ll have to see him to believe him. Same goes for other stars showcased such as Rubberneck Holmes and Crip Heard.

My username means “Never pick a favourite character after just 3 Discworld books. I mean it. Don’t. Vimes is, and always will be your favourite, but you chose Lobsang you stupid idiot”

flight

It’s a rock.

Well, elsewhere on the net, I’m called Honey but that was already in use in here. I have few variations on that but have been told they all sound like porn names. I am often called Honey even in work (though they don’t know that I use that name on the net). So Honey suits me - even when people know my real name, they still call me Honey!

Rhino is my bf’s nickname - I had to think of some new name to use here and, bearing in mind the previous “porn name” comments, I wanted something a little less… obvious. Rhino’sHoney was my brilliant idea - personally, I now think its crap and wish I was just Honey - cos thats just who I am :stuck_out_tongue: - also, I didn’t want to be marked out as someone’s property (not that he’d think that way anyway) but, hell, I don’t think very fast or well under pressure obviously

Hmmmmmmm bearing :stuck_out_tongue: in mind that I like very hairy men, a friend of mine found a link to a site about Bears - its a fetish thing for men and women who loves hairy guys … everytime I see your name, I think about that :stuck_out_tongue:

Ehhhhhhhh ok, and now back to our original programming…

Mine is short for Mephistopheles, a fictional demon or devil who has appeared in numerous groovy plays, comics, books, songs, and so forth. The exact place of Mephistopheles in the hierarchy of Hell varies, depending what source you use. I use the short version of my name because the long form has several different spellings and because it’s too hard for some people to pronounce. I chose this for my user name because I like plays, comics, books, songs, and so forth  , especially when they involve angels, demons, souls lost and found, the battle between good and evil, and similar characters and themes. You know, Devil’s Advocate, The Exorcist, stuff by Marlowe and that Goethe guy . . . For whatever reason, I often find myself rooting for the “bad guy” in these stories, though I, at least IMHO, am not really evil (though I am often misunderstood).

Oh, and Topaz . . . this thread has been done before  (kidding, I’m just kidding).

Finally, your parents did an outstanding job when they gave you your name–it’s unusual, cool, and very attractive. I’m just a boring old T-- um, never mind, paranoia and all that . . .

One of the more interesting craters on the moon, which in turn was named after the French philosopher/scientist Pierre Gassendi.

::dramatic voice:: I wanted something relatively simple that would illustrate my inquisitive nature and passionate dedication to an ultimate truth. And it doesn’t sound like a porn name, like my other usernames.

Mangetout, I lucked out - I thought I’d never find an appropriate venue to express my admiration. Great name!
