Let the Race Baiting begin

I’m already tired of this presidential race.
Today’s examiner headline “GORE PICKS JEWISH RUNNING MATE”
really really big.
What the fuck? Why does it matter. Yes I know it’s relavent, and it’s unique and all that. But, it seems a teency bit strange that the first thing advertised is his ethnicity/religion. You didn’t see “BUSH PICK PROTESTANT RUNNING MATE” no of course not. I really dread this. I can just see the questions. “Do you really want a jew in charge of the largest country in the world” I can always hope that people will be better than that, but I know they won’t.
At least the examiner changed it’s afternoon headline. “Gore makes historic choice”
sigh.

Well from a positive standpoint, when you realize there have not been any Jewish vice-presidential candidates before (according to CNN) it is news.

Damn, you beat me to it! I was going to post the exact same thread. Of course, the religous beliefs of a canditate do matter, but are certainly not the defining thing about that canditate.

Exactly. I have no problem with people talking about it or bringing it up. I DO have a problem the way it is being talked about and portrayed in the media.

Why would the religious beliefs of a candidate matter if he is a Democrat?

Correct me if I’m wrong, but the Democrat Party isn’t restricted to one single belief, is it?

IIRC, wasn’t it a huge deal when JFK was nominated and elected too, because of his Roman Catholicism?

I think the fact that there’s a non-WASP on the ticket is great. But I’ve also read that the fact that he was highly critical of Clinton was a major part of his being chosen. Gore is trying hard to separate himself from Clinton.

No, it isn’t Coldfire. Nor is the Republican Party. But it is something new for a Jewish person to be the nominee of one of the two major parties.

Actually, the first rather random thought that popped into my head when I saw this was whether this would be enough to make Dr. Laura vote Democrat. Not sure where the thought came from, but that’s what popped into my head first.

Actually, I think it’s a good choice, he was one of the first people to take Clinton to task on Monicagate, though he voted against impeachment.

Just as Persephone just said while I was typing this!

Damn, and here I was thinking this thread was about bears or greyhounds… ::sigh::

Personally, I think it’s pretty stupid the way things like that are made a big deal of. And my English is deserting me.

mon Dieu…

Apparently my french too; I’m not sure if I spelled that right.

So let’s go back to caveman:
Press Bad! Bad!

No, press good. Good!

I think that a headline like “Gore picks Jewish Running Mate” is pretty even-handed. It allows the reader to read it however he wants. I add a “Glory halleluia, it’s about time!” Others may add an ethnic slur, but they won’t be voting for Gore anyway.

And it was the press that reminded me of what JFK said forty years ago when the topic of his religion came up. He said something like, “If a Jew can be elected Lord High Mayor of Dublin, a Catholic can be elected President of the United States.”

Lieberman was a fascinating choice, far more interesting than Dick Cheney, and I will be proud to vote for him in November.

I think it’s a very shrewd choice. Very little downside. As has been mentioned, people who would vote against someone because they are Jewish probably weren’t voting for Gore in the first place.

On the other hand, Leiberman may bring back the Jewish voters to the Democratic party who have been voting with the GOP recently.

I like him because he’s witty and because he’s already gone on the attack. Since Gore has been pretty much invisible thus far, perhaps the Veep to be will inject a little interest into the campaign.

Personally, I wish it didn’t matter. But it does matter. And therefore I think it’s a good thing that he chose him. It’s a very small step, but it’s a step. And it’s a good sign that things are changing, slowly but surely. And personally, I think slow change is the best kind of change.

Actually, his job is much more difficult than that. He has to try to distance himself from Clinton and all the foolishness that surrounded him, yet at the same time connect himself to the prosperity of the last eight years.

Personally, I was gonna vote for him anyway. This only strengthens my resolve. Gore ain’t the greatest thing to walk this earth, but he sure as hell beats Bush.

Heheheh… “beats bush”… heheheheheheheh…

All I know is if the day comes when I read a headline which says “Republican Nominee Picks Muslim Running Mate” is the day we’re all not in Kansas anymore…

Or how about:

BUSH PICK PROSTITUE RUNNING MATE

Which would be more accurate. Hey, I’m still under the influence of ‘Parliment of Whores’ by my hero PJ O’Rourke. Words to live by.

No. The day we see a Dead Chipmunk for president is the day we’re not in Kansas anymore.

Vote Dead Chipmunk in the year 2000!

Oh yeah, and we’re having our own convention soon. Sunday August 19th, don’t miss it!

Oops, that was supposed to be Saturday the 19th.

Ok, I’ll catch hell for this but politics turn me off. I don’t give a rats ass who wins because IMHO, The common people are going to get screwed just like always. It’s a power-mad money game and has been for a long time. The last time I voted was for McGovern in '72. (By the way, I was at the GOP convention in Miami that year, anyone else?) Give me hell here _______.

Nobody else has brought this up yet, so I just thought I’d pitch it out and see what y’all think. What will it do to the Mid-East talks if we have a jewish VEEP. Or a jewish president if it came down to that? Would Arafat still be willing to come to Camp David?

I have no problem with it myself, actually I couldn’t care less, just wondering what you folks think.

Correction…I should have said that I haven’t voted for a president since '72, I do still vote on the state level, although I’m not sure how much good that does either.

Does Lieberman’s being Jewish affect my opinion of him any? Nope. Do I understand that it’s newsworthy? Well, worthy of the News, at least. “Gore picks Jewish Veep!”, “Bush Scratches Nose On Bus!”, “Jesse Ventura Bodyslams GOP, Dem Candidates!” (this I actually want to see).

I agree that there’s no winning come November. What this country needs is a REAL hotshot candidate, someone that EVERYONE loves, someone that can REALLY bring this country to greatness…

Someone like me.

Everyone… Vote Diddly in '00!

However, I find the choice of Lieberman excellent. I don’t see any way Gore could have done better, and it came as one hell of a suprise. I thought for sure he’d pick a straight ‘yes’ man.

I think now we are doing a little better than ‘the lesser of two evils’.

And perhaps now at least the election will become more interesting as the Jew-baiters come squirming and shrieking out of the woodwork.

filthy

For years I’ve been seeing this crap on Usenet:

NAZI LOSER: Jews runs the world, uh-huh! They’re running the US!

ME: Gosh, I don’t recall many Jewish Presidents.

NAZI LOSER: It’s a secret conspiracy!

ME: So how do you know about it, spanky?

NAZI LOSER: You’re a ZOG spy!
The Internet’s going to have so much crap about this it’s going to ooze out your hard drive. Mark my words. Now I hope Lieberman ends up being President somehow 'cause it’ll give the David Irvings of the world embolisms.
