Let's debunk this chain mail - don't hold your cell phone close to your ear

A close relative has sent me another message with the question “How much of this is true?” Usually when this happens, I track down references (such as Snopes). I also remind this close relative that these things have never turned out to be true. This time I can’t find specific references for debunking. I suspect that might be because this message seems to have originated in India. Anyway, here it is.

  1. http://www.hoax-slayer.com/use-left-ear-mobile.html

  2. Yahoo | Mail, Weather, Search, Politics, News, Finance, Sports & Videos

  3. Bullshit but I can’t find anything authoritative

  4. Manufacturer denies it, unable to locate independent testing

  5. FDA says neither safe nor effective. Don’t know whether the products listed here actually have it.

  6. This one is just really out there. Do people routinely buy cotton at intersections in India and stick it in their ears?

2 watts out of a cell phone? Yeah right. A bag (car) phone will do 3 watts transmit, but that’s going out an external antenna mounted outside the car. GSM phones do about 850mW, CDMA 1W maximum.
