Let's design a liberal American flag

There’s some kind of image in the red stripes too but I can’t quite make it out.

Are the black stripes added to the flag, or are they just part of the background unfortunately included? Because I can’t see what positive purpose they serve. Also the 52 stars are there, but the array is badly designed (e.g. you can do 8 rows of alternating 7 and 6 stars). The design in the red stripes is pretty much pointless, in my opinion, plus ugly. Altogether a pretty poor effort. I hope the artist’s version is better.

Fifthing. Though I don’t generally call it Old Glory; I’m not all that much into glory, in the political sense.

No political faction owns the flag, or owns the country. It’s my country too. It’s my flag too.

I had a little one I bought to carry in protest marches back in the 1970’s. I wore the poor thing out between 2016 and the lockdown; I need to get another one. – just put that on the errands list.

Me howevermanyth. They are appropriating every traditional national symbol and that must be resisted.

I have no problems flying the Stars and Stripes, and do agree that it’s a bad idea to let it become ‘owned’ by Right. Not because it’s letting them ‘win’, but that it feeds into and reinforces their perception that they’re the only 'true Americans. That’s why I am in general not a fan of creating a liberal American Flag. That is only going to make the situation worse, and make it easier for them.

Having said that, the OP is correct - I know that if I see someone with a traditional flag flying around their house, my first instinct is to assume it’s a Right Winger conspicuously showing said ownership (and for the one that STILL flies a Trump2020 flag underneath… less said the better) . So why not do the same? Fly our flag, and under it feel free to fly any other flag that works for you, BLM - Pride - etc. Very few Americans are all just one thing or another. Show your love or respect for your country if you wish, and show that there are other things just as important to you.

Some may say it’s just virtue signaling, as if flying a national flag is somehow exempt from such concerns, but showing what is important to a person, regardless of political affiliation is their right. However, I have the same right to give those people flying flags I find abhorrent the finger every time I drive by (I’m looking at you Mr. Trump2020).

There’s a very good idea.

What they said ^^.

Something like this. Maybe fly the traditional U.S. flag underneath it.

Actually, you’ll find plenty. Like, everyone in the military, for starters. And most schools. And a lot of folks who are just plain patriotic. It’s only among the false patriots like Trump and his followers that desecration is common. And the vast majority of those desecrators are right-wing.

I wouldn’t put it exactly this way, but yes, that’s right.

Let’s not have one more goddamn flag saying that we’re different from everyone else. I don’t want a liberal flag. I’m sick of people flying that stupid “don’t tread on me” flag, or Blue Lives Matter flags, or Q flags, or three-percenter flags. No more goddamn flags.

Enough.

If (us) liberals want to fly a flag, fly the American flag. It’s our flag as much as anyone else’s. And I’m tired of us being ashamed to be patriotic. I mean, seriously. Fly an American flag outside your brownstone in Park Slope, I guarantee you the locals will have something to say about it. Quite loudly. Screw them as much as the “don’t tread on me” morons. Fly that flag. We’re the real Americans. Not those who want to restrict what being a “real American” means. Which is bullshit.

Again, it’s our flag too. Maybe even more than it’s their flag. We don’t need another one.

No. This is a bad idea.

The idea, the ideal, of America already represents diversity. To design a special flag to express that lets the right-wingers/Trumpists/whatever deny that, to take that away from us. It says to them that you’re right, we’re not real Americans, and the American flag doesn’t represent us.

Fuck them. It’s our flag. We don’t need another one.

If you took the time to read the whole thing I think your assumptions and conclusions would drastically change.

Looks like you’re restricting what being a “real American” means, there: stating that you, for one, are, but that those who want X are, well, not.

OK. OK. Yes. They are “real Americans,” in the sense that they are citizens, I suppose.

But Trumpists have rejected everything that’s fundamental about America. Right down to actually rejecting, and trying to prevent, using violence, the Constitutional and peaceful transfer of power from one administration to the next. That seems to me to be pretty un-American. For all the right-wing talk about being “Constitutional conservatives,” they are completely uninterested in the Constitution. Well, except maybe for the Second Amendment, and even there they reject a couple of centuries of previous Supreme Court jurisprudence.

But yes, they are Americans too. I stand corrected.

You’re assuming I haven’t?

I would say that. In general, when I see someone flying the flag, or wearing or flag t-shirt, or a flag decal on their truck, in the absence of other information, I assume it’s right-wing virtue signaling.
