Conservatives have somewhat appropriated the American flag; flying one risks being painted as a knuckle-dragger. If they want to make it more obvious they have multiple options, like the black flag, Betsy Ross, or the thin blue line.
We need an unabashedly American flag that also says we don’t support insurrectionists. My suggestion is a flag with a single green stripe, similar to the thin blue line. It’ll have to be a bright green to differentiate it from blue.
Another possibility is a flag with a rainbow of stripes. My concern there is that it’s not obviously inclusive of minorities but there would be no confusion as to the intent. It would be a great flag for Pride day.
Flying a modification of the flag, like the Blue Line or the black flag, is a sign of lack of patriotism. The flag code is clear that using the American flag as the basis for some other flag is disrespectful.
I was quite sad when the Gadsden Flag became associated with the Tea Party movement as I was no longer comfortable displaying it in my home. I’m not letting them take Old Glory from me. They can fight me for it.
If you read the whole flag code I doubt you’d find anyone who abides by all that nonsense. Intent determines respect not arcane rules that nobody knows. In any event those modifications you mentioned are still more respectful than the weirdos who burn and stomp on the flag which is typically far left theater.
There is a singer/songwriter named Macy Gray (whose work I do not know) who has been floating an idea of replacing the all-white stars with multi-colored stars, to represent diversity. (Not so incidentally, there is an artist named Kate Kretz who filed a copyright for this idea in February 2020, something to remember when one is arguing the merits or otherwise of this flag idea.) Anyway, of all the revisions this seems both radical enough to inspire attention, but still recognizably the same flag. Good luck agreeing what all the colors should be and where they should be placed, though.
