Let's judge this 14-year-old's singing ability.

i do not have a ear for music, so i ask you to judge. how good is she? i prefer it to the original.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SHhEWbs3zJg - Lissa Lohner and band covering “Put Your Records On” by Corinne Bailey Rae.

Her voice is good but might be great; that song isn’t really a vocal showcase. Her voice is very pleasant, IMO, and she seems to have a decent bit of control so with the right songs she would prolly be well regarded.

I listened to it without watching.

At 14, she’s off to an excellent start - pitch is spot on, enunciation is clear, and she’s not doing wild melissima the way a lot of girls want to do. Her phrasing and choice of dynamics need a little development.

The band needs someone to run the mixer. The balance between instruments and vocals was off.

I’m not a huge fan of quirky voices, but she’s got good pitch and control and she doesn’t feel the need to embellish a simple tune just to try and impress. I wish she’d stop looking behind her so much, but that’s just because they patched together takes over a straight rendition, and her looking away didn’t coincide with any change in the vocal line. I’d listen to more stuff by her.

I was fully prepared to say ‘meh’, but she actually has a fine voice. She could sing the blues with a bit more life experience.

I was fully prepared for this to be an ironic deconstruction of how harshly we judge people like Rebecca Black.

I think she has a great voice. She should team up with this girl.

Her voice really reminds me of someone. I wanted to say Lily Allen, but I fired up a couple Lily Allen songs and I’m not hearing it anymore, so I’m lost again.

great, now you’ve got me wondering too.

She sounds a little like Norah Jones. . . I wouldn’t be surprised if she’s an influence.

Sounds like she might have a little problem with her R’s. . . early on she says ". . . recoouuuud on. . . " I found that slightly distracting but later on, when she’s singing with more force, it’s not noticeable.

Overall, she’s very good.

Is that an original song? I think the song is impressive.

that’s it! can’t speak for Jragon but i was thinking of Norah Jones.

the song is a cover of “Put Your Records On” by Corinne Bailey Rae.

I didn’t hear Norah Jones when I listened to the video. (I’m not saying there isn’t any Norah influence - just that I didn’t hear that.) What I heard was an adolescent who in a few years could aspire to Eva Cassidy. Norah Jones is a bit more alto and I think this girl has the possibility to find a bit of the soprano scale.

OK - I just listened to the video again and I was wrong - there is definitely some Norah Jones there. (I still want to hear her to try to emulate Eva - I think she could do it!)

Of course she’s good. Nice to hear a young singer with a well-developed lower register. Most wannabe-vocalists that age are ascending ever higher into the sopranosphere.

She has a lot of good singing tools, as phouka mentioned.

I want to say that the style she is emulating belies her youth, which makes me think that she is imitating those feelings rather than expressing them from her own experience. This is not a dig at her, but rather an expectation that she will only get better as her life gives her more to work with.

part of the reason for starting a thread is me wondering why she does not appear to have found success. i found no options to buy her only song cover, a mention on Fox news as a shill to someplace and less than a million hits on Youtube after half a year. surely even as a one hit wonder she should be able to get a nice pile of money. (or are you not allowed to make money off of song covers?)

so in the OP i was thinking maybe she’s not as good as i thought; it’s really that tough to get into a singing career; or maybe the reasons are personal.

Not every good singer wants (or is ready) to make a career out of it. If her parents are smart, they’ll develop her talent slowly but surely. They may have been contacted by a record label and turned it down. You just never know.

Regarding who this girl sounds like: She’s basically imitating the style of Corinne Bailey Rae in the original. Which is okay, I guess, except that it’s a much-overdone affectation these days. I don’t mean everyone’s imitating Corinne Bailey Rae, but that vocal style is actually not very unique. The last several seasons of American Idol (I’m not watching this season) have had lots of girls in the auditions with basically this same style.

As to the OP’s wondering why this girl doesn’t appear to have found success: She has potential, but so do a million other young singers with youtube videos. Hell, remember when Adele’s Rolling In The Deep was the big thing? There were tons of amateur covers of that song on youtube, and a lot of them were really impressive. This girl is pretty good, but not amazing, IMHO. I am not a singer, but it seems to me that it’s often easier to ape someone else’s style (like she’s doing) than to sing with your “own” voice.

Lissa Lohner has her own Youtube channel now, with 3 original songs and another cover - http://www.youtube.com/channel/UCZ5_jiD_R2yv4hJUR5pXRTw/videos?view=0

what is your opinion? i still very much prefer the Put Your Records On cover, though that might just be because it’s done in a studio. not interested in the other songs, especially the Chasing Pavements cover.
