Let's smoke some scorpions, dude!

Well, I thought I’d tried 'em all, until I came across this article. Here’s the relevant part:

Yeah, right.

I’d like to put this one away with toad-skins, bannana peels, and peanut-skins in the, “no, they won’t get you high, but they might seriously mess you up” file.

Has anyone ever heard of smoking scorpion stingers before? And please, kids, don’t go and try this at home.

Well, there was that Beverly Hillbillies episode where Granny invited all the hippies to go with her to smoke some crawdads.

Memorable line I’m surprised made it past CBS’ Standards and Practices guys:

.

WOW…WOW…WOW

Other people do this tooo???
Just kidding. But actually Sofa I have heard of this before, and not just with scorpions. Having lived in the desert south west close to Mexico for a few years, I saw many a weird tradition or ritual. I am talking about real Carlos Castaneda stuff. Smoking everything from gecko tails to Gila Monster tongues. Yup some of those shamans really get into smoking the rarites of the world. Peyote aside, smoking parts of some ‘animals’ and herbs and roots and such has been used for millennia. Having never done this myself, I think it is more for symbolism instead of effect. But I don’t know. I’m not about to go out and cut off a stinger on a scorpion and find out though

Well, this is interesting. A Google search for “scorpion venom hallucinogenic” and variations thereof doesn’t turn up anything useful concerning putting scorpion tails in your pipe and smoking them. So evidently it’s not “the next big thing” and you’re not missing anything, SK.

But there was this. The composition of scorpion venom.

I wouldn’t be surprised if smoking something like scorpion venom would cause hallucinations.

Chemical tech-talk about scorpion venom, which is going to play cheerful music at you. Sorry.

I have a friend from China. He says he eats scorpions all the time - usually fried or grilled. Supposedly it does cause a mild high. It’s not something I can ever imagine trying… too much like eating… well, like eating a bug!

Holy cow. Man, am I glad I retired from that sport before I got to the envenomation stage.

I think I’ll stick to Nintendo.

O, Sultan of the Ottomans, am I missing something? Your link goes to a T. Herman Zweibel editorial fromThe Onion. It’s not even an Onion story about smoking scorpions.

I haven’t actually eaten the scorpion myself, but yes it’s not all that hard to find. Actually, it’s Shandong cuisine (and they probably eat it elsewhere as well). Shandong province has been in a feast/famine cycle for time immemorial, and now that there are good times, the famine food has a certain cachet.

I’ve eaten a lot of wierd chinese food, and am old enough to where I no longer feel the need. Had king snake tonight as a matter of fact, but I passed on the snake bile in a shot of white lightening.

Hey, Buckner, you’re right, I didn’t even check the link. Sofa King, we love Herman, but where’s Raza?

According to Google, “Ghulam Raza” is a fairly common Pakistani name, but there’s a Ghulam Raza who used to be head of the SMP. Is is possible that your link was a spoof? Even though it says Reuters?

Ugh. My apologies. Let’s try that again:

Junkies, Getting High in the Pits

Gee, some Onion fan has got to be mighty confused right now.

Well, checked in with the roomie ( Mr. Scorpion Systematist ) - According to him scorpion venom denatures rapidly with oxidation and heat, so it’s highly unlikely that smoking the stuff does anything for you. 'course you’d still be inhaling carbonized protein - Anyone tried stuffing a strip of steak into their bong, lately  ?

And to the best of his knowledge no one has ever gotten a high off a sting.

Generally speaking I’m inclined to trust his expertise on this, as he knows the scorpion literature pretty well  .
