Tbh, I really don’t think we need another POTC movie…I love Captain Jack, but the first trilogy was perfect (to me). This fourth one (and any subsequent others) will just feel forced.
I don’t think any movie should be sequeled (unless it is a series*). In general, the sequel cannot capture what made the original great. There are exceptions, but I prefer to stick with Howard Chaykin’s rule: It’s better to have people begging for more than to have them saying, “why does he continue to drag this out?”
True Grit, BTW, is a remake, not a sequel. There is usually room for remakes – they have a higher rate of success than sequels.
*A series are multiple films with the same characters, with each film independent and only very slow change over time. Think The Thin Man or James Bond. A sequel is Little Fockers.
Book: Gateway, by Fredrick Pohl.
Too late, he wrote a sequel. Beyond the Blue Event Horizon I thought it was quite good.
Bad sequels
Brian’s Song II
More War and Peace
Independence Day II
The Wicker Man II
(These latter 2, we could have done without the recent versions)
Not to mention that Knightley shan’t be in the next one. Too old at 27.
Like there’s any reason to watch that series other than to look at that face.
King has also kicked around the idea of a sequel to Salem’s Lot, which would probably be wretched as well.
Wait, what? Seriously? But she’s a babe! And will be one, in all likelihood, for another twenty years!
Stupid Hollywood.
I blame you and the rest of the board. Every time I come up with a plan to murder everyone at Disney, you guys are all, “No, Skaldimus! It’s too evil!”
According to IMDB, Penelope Cruz is the new female lead. The gods hate us.
Well, you guys.
Depends on if you mean the original or the remake. I’ve heard interesting ideas about sequels to the original. (I’m not talking about The Wicker Tree- formerly titled Riding of the Laddie/May Day/Cowboys for Christ, either.) One involves Howie surviving as a disfigured guru for repentant Summerislanders & another- Willow having conceived a child by him & then fleeing the community who wants to kill the baby.
In all fairness, Ms. Cruz is lovely. And I thought she did a fine job in “Open Your Eyes.” But still - I’ve never been impressed by her acting in English-language gigs. And isn’t she older than Knightley anyway?
What have I told you about bothering me with facts?
Eh. I’m not sure either of those would work terribly well. Howie-as-creepy-guru would rob the sequel of the relatively light, surreal tone that drove most of the first movie. Sure, it got extremely dark at the very end - but the fact it had been a relatively cheerful film for the first three-quarters or so made the end much more effective.
As for Willow being pregnant with Howie’s kid - why would the Islanders want to kill that infant? Summerisle theology values adult sacrifices much more highly than child sacrifice - the kid should be fine. Besides, a big part of Howie’s character was his aversion to sex outside of Christian marriage. It’s not really believable that he got anyone pregant before his appointment with the Wicker Man.
