Let's talk horror movies

The Autopsy of Jane Doe is one of my favorite horror stories and I found truly scary. Noticed last night it is on Tubi, so I guess I am watching it again!
These are the kinds of horror films I like: not a lot of blood or gore (no texas chainsaw massacre bs) but a lot of mental stuff, a lot of misdirection, A TON OF SUSPENSE.

Recommendations or your favorites are welcome!

The Ring (2002) is one of my favorite horror movies. No blood and guts just great suspense. The scene when the girl crawls out of the TV…awesome.

Full of 80s cheese but my favorite horror movie has always been Prince of Darkness (1987). The 80s cheese actually makes it better. Also a good example of a movie depicting a future that is now long in the past (1999).

I liked The Devil’s Rejects. I enjoyed the subversion of the 70s slasher film, and the antagonist-as-protagonist angle. It’s really more “torture porn” than character study; no one will ever confuse it with Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer, but it’s still stupid fun.

Always enjoyed the Hellraiser films, if only for their insane imagery. Bloodline is probably my favorite of the series because there’s actually a compelling story there.

Other favorites are Midnight Meat Train, a very small film with a ridiculously famous cast (Bradley Cooper, Vinnie Jones, Leslie Bibb, Brooke Shields), The Host (Korean monster movie), The Void (Cthulu-inspired, and now that I think about it, it actually has a lot in common with Prince of Darkness), and, if it could be considered a horror movie, Trollhunter (2011, Norwegian). The last one was set for an American remake but got cancelled.

As Above, So Below got bad reviews but I enjoyed it. I really liked the unusual take on Hell.

I’m also a fan of the Jeepers Creepers movies. They’re summer teen slasher schlock, but there’s something about the Creeper and its mythology that are compelling to me. 2 is the best one, IMO.

Everyone has seen it I’m sure, but Dawn of the Dead (2004) is easily the best of the Romero remakes.

And then there’s my love of stupid, extremely low-budget old horror films like Basket Case.

I loved MMT. It’s based on a story by Clive Barker.

Great suggestions!
I first watched the Ring alone at home. SCARY!
Love Hellraiser and love some of the books too.
Trollhunter is hilarious.
Some of the others I have not seen and will track down!

Remakes of cheesy old monster movies that are very good despite their titles-

She Creature- Carnival trickster finds real mermaid. Horror ensues.

Earth Vs The Spider- A loser seizes the opportunity to become a super hero. Horror ensues.

How To Make A Monster- AI goes wrong. Not a great film but still fun.

El Orfanto (The Orphanage) was very good. Non-bloody. Kind of like The Ring in that it’s really more of a mystery film, but with horror elements.

I’ve been watching a lot of Netflix and seen some interesting horror movies on there that I would not have otherwise found.

In no particular order:

The Ritual
1922 (from a Stephen King story)
Gerald’s Game (same)
The Rental
Hush
Creep
It Follows
The Babadook

Yes, that’s a good one. It stayed with me for a long time when I saw it as teenager.

I’d suggest 1408. It plays on one of my nightmare scenarios : finding myself in a room where increasingly creepy and threatening events occur and realizing I cannot get out.

I always have to think about that one for a second when it’s mentioned; I get it confused with that horrible Jim Carrey horror movie. It’s absolutely just because they both have a number in the title; they’re very, very different films, in both story, and the quality and execution of that story.

1408 was a good movie but the short story is out of this world. It is still so good I get chills.
“Five! All your friends are dead!”

Triangle is a good psychological horror film about a group trapped on board an ocean liner.

Some of my favorites:

Re-Animator. The first sequel, Bride of Re-Animator, is nearly as good.
Pirhana
An American Werewolf in London
Ju-On
Phenomena (released in truncated form in North America as Creepers)
Black Sunday (the Mario Bava one, not the “terrorist at the Super Bowl” one)
Dawn of the Dead (the original)

Recently, Ti West’s trilogy that began with X and continued with Pearl has impressed me so far.

For a little known gem, I recommend Neil Jordan’s Byzantium, a sexy and pulpy vampire story.

Ringu (original Japanese film remade as The Ring in America)
Ju-On (Japanese film remade as The Grudge in America)
Tucker and Dale vs. Evil (Just a GREAT movie)
Cabin in the Woods (Also a GREAT movie)

The Platform was pretty good. More of a sci-fi psychological thriller than a horror film, but I think the OP would like it.

Along similar lines, the Cube movies were pretty good, IIRC.

The Blackcoats Daughter. Incredibly atmospheric and creepy, with kind of a mystery. Kiernan Shipka is pretty amazing in it.

I can’t recommend this enough. We love it. It will seem kind of cheesy until you get what is going on. We watch it about every year or so. Full of easter eggs.

Ring is way up there too, as is Harpoon (2019)

<Speargun!>

I enjoyed the movie too but the thing that’s so creepy about the short story is that the guy never has a chance. And you know it the second he looks at the bizarro door. You’re basically just watching a haunted hotel room torture a doomed man.

One of my favorite ever movies is Alien. Visceral body horror is not usually my thing (or maybe it is? I love The Thing too!) Everything about the film is so fascinating to me. The class exploitation subtext. The science fiction tropes. The creepy ass droid. Ellen fuckin’ Ripley. And talk about an inciting incident! Hard to beat that one.

I’m a bit of a wimp and there are entire subcategories of horror I refuse to watch (home invasion, torture, serial killers are right out.) But give me a creepy atmosphere and I’m all in. Loved The Lighthouse. The Haunting of Hill House TV series was glorious (as was the book. Actually it kind of has 1408 vibes now that I think about it.) Shutter Island is maybe not strictly horror but it has all the isolated island creepy psych hospital tropes. I just dig the atmosphere.

All of the following are worth watching, imo (I could probably think up many more that aren’t).

Island of Lost Souls (1933)
The Black Cat (1934)
Curse of the Demon (1957)
Horror of Dracula (1958)
Matango: Fungus of Terror a.k.a. Attack of the Mushroom People (1963)
The Devil Rides Out (1968)
The Mansion of Madness (1973)
It’s Alive (1974)
God Told Me To a.k.a. Demon (1976)
Alucarda (1977)
Shock Waves (1977)
From Beyond (1986)
Near Dark (1987)
The Blob (1988)
Brain Damage (1988)
Dog Soldiers (2002)

Ooo! Love Reanimator! SO GOOD! SO CAMP!
Triangle was good.
American Werewolf in London - probably best werewolf movie ever.
Tucker and Dale and Cabin in the Woods are both part of my collection.
Love Cube, some of my favorite movies too.
Platform went on and on and on.

Spice_Weasel, the fact that Mike is pretty much broken forever, can’t even have a phone.

I just started watching Haunting of Hill House. Love the spookiness but love the adult issues and how well they are dealt with even more. Did they ever leave?

Shutter Island is good but kinda predictable.

Lots more here for my list! Thank you friends!
