EFF, I believe, is one entity that has been lobbying against this.
I guess we will be calling it the RupertNet (cr).
We all realize that SDMB is just as vulnerable as any other website to SOPA? I wonder why they did not do a blackout, or at least put up a widget? Sounds like there’s some home-grown ignorance needs fighting here …
Simple question – why or why not?
SOPA officially died as soon as Obama made it public that he’d veto it. It’s nice that Wikipedia went ahead with their blackout, but smaller sites would only be hurt by doing more than blacking out their logo.
Obama has indicated he would veto the bill as it is currently written.
Pass the House/Senate? Maybe, it’s getting a lot of support for reasons that I suspect have to do with being filed under “use keyboard, not able to,” as well as the entertainment industry being a very big, established, organized lobby. However, I doubt it will get enough support to be able to override the veto Obama said he’d do.
Since the subject of FixMyIgnorance’s thread (“Will SOPA pass?”) was already being discussed in this larger thread, I’ve merged the two. My post and Jragon’s were made in response to FixMyIgnorance’s OP.
The current House version is already off the table. So, no, it won’t pass. Or even be brought up to a vote.
We’ll have to see what the final version of the updated bill looks like. My guess is it won’t even get brought up in the House unless the Whips figure it has enough votes. Actually, that’s probably why the current version was withdrawn in the first place. Cross fingers that it’s not a horribly written bill.
The Senate version, PIPA, has wide Senate support across both parties and would probably pass in a straight up or down vote. Ron Wyden put a hold on it last year, but it’s currently scheduled for a vote next week.
Thanks for the link.
Hopefully a lot of people are contacting their senators. I went to Wikipedia, put in my zip code, and it gave me the contact information for my representative and senators. I was able to get to my representative’s contact page and send a message, but for both my senators it said “Sorry, the web page you have requested is experiencing technical difficulties. The Webmaster has been alerted.”
Actually, both of my Senator’s pages are down at the moment (Jim DeMint and Lindsay Graham). Funny, that.
I did send a note to my Congressman, Tim Scott, last week. I requested a reply but haven’t received one yet.
Which means it is not over. We are going to see this zombie rise again. Both parties have been bought off by the entertainment/media industry. The media giants will not rest until they OWN the internet, excuse me, the RupertNet (CR). The same technology that prevents piracy can/will also be used to hobble political dissent. We don’t need more one-party states like China or South Carolina.
What means it is not over? That lots of Congressional web pages are down?
I tend not to believe Obama any more.
I tend to believe him on this. He doesn’t use the veto threat very often.
On the other hand, it really seems like it’s a futile gesture. The current version of SOPA will probably be slightly modified and simply re-submitted. Obama never made any promises about vetoing that one. To be fair, the revised bill may actually be pretty good, but I wouldn’t bet on it.
Whether or not you believe him, you can believe that he will have no problem taking a popular principled stand against the least popular piece of legislation passed during his term.
I’m assuming a bit, of course; I have no idea if SOPA/PIPA are unpopular. However, I’m fairly certain they’re going to be after today.
Sen. Marco Rubio, who co-sponsored the Senate version of the bill, says he no longer supports it. Sen. Cornyn is also saying the Senate should slow down and take more time to consider the issue.
The Internet was built to avoid barriers.
That is to say, it deliberately reroutes things so that data can get through.
However, if the USA allows direct control of the few primary routers by some governmental censors, then it is possible to subvert the entire system.
Curiously (and you all know this) the Internet was designed by the USA government under ARPA (now DARPA). I hate this, but it can be argued that they have full purview to do as they will with it.
Of course, if they really mess with it, international online commerce (already a multi-billion dollar concern) will be totally hosed.
Who is pulling this GOP Texan’s ropes?
Is it Murdock?
Just him? He is but one man. Yes, he has perverted the airwaves with Faux News for years, but you can always switch to a different channel. Is he trying some weird takeover of the entire Internet for personal gain? Why? The man is rich beyond the dreams of Croesus.
Perhaps, his penis doesn’t work anymore and this is way to replace it.
Seriously, y’all, this is really weird.
