…the man who captured the Tiger.
Who would’ve thunk that the one man who stood up above the Tiger Woods mystique all these years would be the man to push him off of the mountain? Well, now it seems obvious doesn’t it? All of the other world-class golfers always showed so much respect for Tiger while he was on top of the golf world for 5 years. But not Vijay. He recognized Tiger for what he really is: a man, and not a God. I truly believe that many others had the ability to knock Tiger off, but not the intestinal fortitude. They withered in his presence. They feared him. In interviews, every other golfer would constantly praise Tiger’s skills, work ethic, power and mental game. Meanwhile Vijay allowed his caddie to wear a “Tiger Who?” hat. He publically voiced his goal of taking over the golf world. The others only whispered this desire to themselves in front of mirrors. He never showed any sign of fear in front of Tiger. Take yesterday, when Tiger came back from 3 strokes down to tie Vijay. Any other current golfer would’ve choked. Not Vijay. He took the lead back to 3 strokes in a 4 hole span. He seized the world #1 ranking from Tiger in a head-to-head battle. Tiger was speechless. He knew that the gig was up. He lost to <GULP> a better golfer.
So here’s to you Vijay Singh. At 40+ years of age, you deserve your newly acquired title of “World’s Best Golfer”. May your reign continue. And even when it ends, you’ll forever have the distinction of being the man who knocked off Tiger Woods.
