Liberal = cat person?

I have 2 dogs (beagles) and one cat. Therefore I must be a conservative. I am not sure how the turtle impacts the equation though.Must balance it out making me neutral.

Because it’s an internet messageboard. Cat-people seem to be one of the types overrepresented on the internet in general.

That seems to be true. Messageboards and cats seem to go together.

Simple – liberals value independence and affection. Conservatives value barking, slobbering, and a pack mentality with authoritarian top-down/top-dog leadership.

The only correlation is that cat-people respond to the cat-threads. There are more cat-threads around because cats have more ‘cute’ moments available for pictorial capture than dogs can manage. And people (of all faunal preferences) respond to cute pics.

I guarantee there is no over-representation of pussy-lovers on the board.

BTW, I’m a Marxist to my very core, and dogs are my weakness especially if they’ve got those big brown gooey-booey eyes, and floppy ears, and they roll over and let you tickle their tummies and get the leg-scratch thing happening simultaneously, and they woof nicely when you get home, and bring you dribbles and smiles and…

Ah! so it’s not Liberal = cat person. I’t message board person = cat person. See. now I’m learning something. Which brings up the question why is that?

I think the demographic thing has some validity…urban v. suburban. But (while I spent 10 years in NYC) I grew up in the suburbes. And live there now. And still…cat person.

I think kambuckta nailed it. There are more cute kitty-cat pictures on the 'net because there seems to be more opportunities for such pics, therefore they’re all over the show.

Me, I prefer cats, and I vote centre-left. But, at the moment, I don’t have any pets at all (and won’t do for some time yet). Am I a messageboarder because I don’t have pets? No – so, I truly don’t see a correlation between messageboarders of any shade of philosophy, and pet ownership.

Well my cat had sharp green eyes, but he dii have floppy ears and would roll over and let me tickle his tummy. and meow nicely when I get home, and brought me dead animals, out of love…why cant’ we all just get along?

I thought us liberals were supposed to be tree-hugging, granola-eating hippies who hang out in the woods.

You can’t really hang out in the woods with your cat now, can ya?

I was going to say the same thing.

You just don’t see as many threads with people posting about the cute thing their dog did; eating his own poop, drinking out of the toilet, rolling in the dead rotten squirrel, eating dirt then sniffing the guest wearing white pants in the crotchal area and leaving a big dirty noseprint. Although amusing they’re not quite on the same level or up for a much response as “Here’s my kitty hiding in the Christmas tree/ playing with a laser pointer/sleeping in a box half it’s size” and so on.

I do have liberal, democratic leanings (with some exceptions) and I like both dogs and cats but I have morphed into a cat person over the years mostly because they are better suited to having a wacky, constantly changing work cycle…
and they’re so darn cute!

Well but my dog would just pee all over the tree I was hugging and eat all my granola. Whereas my cat would look at me like I was an idiot and go find something to kill. This issue seem to be more complicated than I thought.

I’m solidly conservative and I’ve always had cats. In fact, I hate dogs. That’s probably because of Crusher, the spawn-of-Satan German sheppard that the woman across the street owned. That thing was so vicious, kids would cross the street to our side so they could stay as far away from Crusher as possible. Eventually, we found out why the woman owned such a mean dog. We found this out when the marijuana plants in her back yard grew tall enough to be visible over the privacy fence. Dope lady (as she immediately became known) was arrested, and Crusher disappeared. The whole neighborhood was glad to be rid of that damn dog.

I disagree with the premise of the OP. I’ve seen no correlation between political views and cats or dogs.

I also disagree with this premise. Can you provide a cite? Certainly there are some big, huge corporations run by Republicans. Lots of 'em, in fact. But my personal experiences have shown that (a) the biggest earners in the country seem to be in Hollywood, and it’s overwhelmingly liberal, (b) big earners tend to congregate in big cities on the coasts (e.g. NYC, LA, San Francisco) and those cities vote consistently liberal, © around here, the blue-collar workers, farmers, and ranchers are very conservative and the “rich folk” buying second homes and moving businesses here tend to be very liberal.

Can you show any unbiased statistics or studies that support your statement?

I’ve always been a cat person, yet my political leanings have drifted over the course of time. Registered Republican, but that being said, every poll I take calls me “centrist”.

Just a probability, but still a linear one it seems.

I know more dog people who are liberal than I know liberal cat people.
