Liberal, would you kindly give it a rest about Andrew Jackson? (mild)

Sometimes - OK, a lot of times - I think Lib is a dick, or broadcasting from another dimension, or something. But in this case I cannot agree with the OP. The referenced thread was specifically about Andrew Jackson. It’s not like someone mentioned Jackson in an offhand manner and Lib came in ranting about the Trail of Tears.
… John Adams was a self-righteous prig.

I’m sorry, the phrase is “obnoxious and disliked.”
Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it. I really think there are such atrocious episodes in human history that we have no right to tire of being reminded.
I agree. It’s particularly ironic because the OP once typed, to my shock, something to the effect of “despite the anti-semitism, I still looooove the Romanovs.”

Andrew Jackson was the “judge, jury and executioner” if not anything else. Remember the two Brits he had executed because he thought they were aiding the Seminole allies?

I flatter myself to think that I have a more nuanced understanding of President Jackson than Liberal does. That’s why I’m glad he’s in every thread about him, pointing out what a bastard he was. It’s a perspective that needs to be part of any discussion of the man, and I appreciate that there is someone here who can make these points without having to come back with “on the other hand…” Perhaps it’s a little tiresome to see that Liberal has posted in a Jackson thread and know what the content of the post is already, but there are plenty of posters who didn’t open the last thread on the topic. Perhaps we could have a sticky…

Cite for that exact wording?

I probably said something similiar, but not that exact phrase.

Are you familiar with the phrase “something to the effect of”?

I couldn’t find the thread. I believe it was lost in TWOOMC.

I appologize. Yes, I probably said something similiar.

:o
I don’t want to give the impression that I admire Jackson or anything like that. I agree with you on this point. (And hell, why is fucking Jefferson on the two dollar bill? What’s up with THAT?)

But like I said, this isn’t so much a debate about Jackson-or Bismarck, or Cromwell, or whoever. It’s about Lib’s constant hijacking of threads about how much hated AJ, in discussions that have nothing to do with said opinions.
Just to verify, you did realize I was agreeing with you? Right?
Theodore Roosevelt was an egotist, James Monroe owned slaves, and John Adams was a self-righteous prig.
Well played Capt, I thought you would opt for the Alien and Sedition act on Adams though. It looks like you got at least two posters. Thanks for taking it easy of Theodore.
The horror.

Now I know what separates him from all our other Presidents.

If this were a disqualifying trait, our currency would have no presidential portraits at all.
Fixed that for you.

Really? Then how come you’re not in MPSIMS? Please buy some proper punctuation before you answer.

She is. It’s also true, however, that Guin’s “I’m here in the Pit to give you advise” crap is getting old too. At least she’s got enough sense to put it in her OP this time so it doesn’t sound like backpedaling.

Of course, I just wanted to make things clear.

No shit. I was trying to be nice, rather than saying, Lib, just shut the motherfuck up about Jackson already.

You know, it seems to me that 90% of the problems in this world come from people remembering too much history. If we had MiB-style memory wipe technology, we could sort out all the trouble in the Mid-East over the course of a long weekend.

Ah. It’s a good thing you took the thread to MPSIMS, then. I’m also glad you bought some punctuation, BTW, but you should think about taking one or two of those commas back for a refund. Actually, if the prices are good, you might be able to exchange them for a couple of quotation marks.

On second thought, it might be safer for you to just steer clear of the punctuation store for a while.

It’s called a typo, dear heart.

My view is that those who remember history are more likely to repeat it, because they want revenge against the SOBs who did them wrong.

That and there’s a big difference between remembering history and dwelling on it.

If not for your rather dubious username, I would ask you to marry me for this.

I guess it’s better that I didn’t get around to changing my username to reflect my Nordic Heritge. Our family name was TLDRIDKJKLOLFTW

mhendo, I linked that thread because it marked the beginning, I think, of Liberal’s descent into madness on this subject. Ever since, when the subject of Jackson has come up, Lib has been apt to throw a blue-faced tantrum. That thread was not itself an example of the phenomenon. I should have explained that in my earlier post.

Without hijacking this thread, I would be happy to debate you on Jackson’s actions against the Cherokee if you wish to do it elsewhere.

Not enough bad can be said about the man. It is, in fact, like telling a jewish person to stop complaining when people are praising the “GOOD THINGS” about Hitler. And I dont care a bit about goodwins law.

My family tree just kinda stops in arkansas post because my ancestors escaped from the trail and wouldn’t even tell their children about their heritage. I kinda get pissed to when I see his face on a bill.

Wado, Lib. Keep up the good work.
Maybe you should. Might help with your perspective. Hitler, you see, is responsible for the intentional deaths of more than 6 million Jews (and other victims).

Andrew Jackson was responsible for the relocation of 16,000 Cherokee, and the theft of their property. His successor Martin Van Buren (under whom the removal was actually carried out) shares responsibility with Jackson for the hasty and negligent manner in which the removal was conducted, and the resulting deaths of many Cherokee on the Trail of Tears. (For that matter, John Ross bears some responsibility for misleading his people. So desperate was he to hang onto his great wealth in Georgia that he essentially sacrificed many Cherokee in a quixotic quest to preserve that wealth. I have great sympathy for the Cherokee in general, but not much for that pig-headed bastard.)

The Cherokee removal was wrong and tragic, but hardly in Hitler’s league.
