Look, , Lib, I know you happen to have very strong feelings against the treatment of your ancestors by Andrew Jackson. But I can’t be the only one who is tired of your hijacking of every thread that mentions Jackson.
We get it. You don’t like him. You are pissed on behalf of your forefathers. But you’re NOT the only one who’s ancestors were abused by past tyrants.*
Please, someone asked for advice on a book-you commented on one you hadn’t even read, simply because it contradicted you feelings. Can’t you for once, let it go?
I’m not trying to insult you. I’m simply trying to give you some advice?
*I see your Trail of Tears and raise you one Drogheda. Do you really want to go down this road?
I don’t really understand why he should let it go, sorry. If it’s a fact, and it’s relevant to the discussion, it’s worth saying and frankly, its not really the kind of thing to be asking people to shut up about.
Godwinising a bit, I know, but would it ever be appropriate to say to a Jew “Oh, c’mon folks, we already know millions of your people were systematically exterminated in WWII - can’t you just get over it?”
I didn’t say he shouldn’t be angry or feel it was a travesty. I think he should just turn it down a bit. Like I said, I don’t barge into every thread about Irish history bitching about Cromwell and the like. Or any thread about, oh, say Otto Von Bismarck. (My father’s family is also half-German, from Alsace-Lorraine, and came over around the time of the Franco-Prussian War).
Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it. I really think there are such atrocious episodes in human history that we have no right to tire of being reminded.
Liberal, your response in the other thread was childish and, well, ignorant. Not what we’re supposed to be about in these parts. (And of course, it’s not the first time you’ve reacted to the very mention of Jackson’s name with a childish tantrum.)
It really his pretty sick that President Jackson adorns our $20 Bill. Probably the most common bill in use today with ATMs in heavy use.
He really was a horrible shit of a human and a grossly overrated President. Pull him off and put Theodore Roosevelt, James Monroe or John Adams on the $20. No one will complain too much with that change. If nothing else all three looked better too.
Liberal, what you did in the link thread, was a pretty quick politicizing of a Café thread. I agree with you about Jackson, I think you already know this, but maybe **Guin ** is right and you should censor yourself just a little on this subject.
I don’t want to give the impression that I admire Jackson or anything like that. I agree with you on this point. (And hell, why is fucking Jefferson on the two dollar bill? What’s up with THAT?)
But like I said, this isn’t so much a debate about Jackson-or Bismarck, or Cromwell, or whoever. It’s about Lib’s constant hijacking of threads about how much hated AJ, in discussions that have nothing to do with said opinions.
I don’t see how your link relates at all to this thread.
Guin’s complaint is about Liberal allegedly getting all het up about Jackson in threads where such het-uppedness in not appropriate.
In the thread that you link to, Lib was responding to a thread specifically titled " Did Andrew Jackson SAVE the Cherokee?" You asked, in your OP, whether Jackson’s actions had “some beneficial effect,” and Lib clearly and unequivocally gave you his opinion on the matter.
If you were seeking only the opinions of people who support Jackson, maybe you should have said so in your OP. But if you ask folks for their opinions on a historical subject, you’ve got to be prepared for the fact that, for some people, the subject in question might be a very big issue.
To be quite honest, in that thread you seem to seem look at the fact that some people disagree with you, and draw the conclusion that “No one wants to think the problem through.” Did it ever occur to you that those people HAD thought the problem through, and still ended up with a different point of view from yours?
