Libertarian > Liberal???

When you consider that it’s one of the SDMB’s most vociferous posters who defined himself by his username, it seems pretty logical that other users would be intrigued.

And I would have if he’d had his e-mail address listed in his profile, so you may cordially go fuck yourself.

Lib, I’m not referring to the name change, I’m referring to your bizarre pattern of behavior over the past few weeks. I continue to worry, and I fear if you continue in this vein we’re going to be treated to another one of your meltdowns and/or self-imposed exiles from the SDMB (which was more what I was referring to when I said “swings”). The fact that you can’t see this pattern is why I think you need professional care.

Esprix

Due respect, Esprix, I believe you are mistaken. My e-mail, incidentally, hasn’t changed since you wrote to encourage me before. Much has happened in that time. You’ve lost the address, and I’ve left behind the things that cause meltdowns. Like I said, thanks, but you can run along now. You know that I always have your back.

Just wait til he changes it to Franken…

Well, there’s glory for you.

Daniel

Actually, lib, I’m pretty happy to see the name change–not because you’re reclaiming a sullied name, but because you’re abandoning one.

“Libertarian” in the classical sense refers to good old-fashioned community anarchism, the sort espoused by Kropotkin and Rousseau. Anarchism in which communities respect individual freedom and individual needs and work to sustain them.

Modern property-rights-uber-alles philosophy (which calls itself Libertarianism) is a cryptic cover for rich folks who want to protect their own, people who can’t tell the difference between your body and your possessions and your capital. If it ever made progress beyond a fringe political movement, it would ravage poor communities and centralize power in an ever smaller oligarchy of the propertied class. It wuld be capitalism with no meaningful checks, and would result in a society indistinguishable from the tyrranny it purports to despise. Ideals have been abandoned for a single narrow and unworkable principle.

So I’m glad you’ve abandoned that flag. You may have tattered it, but now it can be beautiful once more.

Daniel

“Thanks, but you can run along now”?

Esprix is trying to help you, even if you don’t think you need it. Is there a need to be so condescending to someone who’s trying to help you?

And you in turn may go fuck yourself. I sense a veritable carousel of self-fuckery happening. I assumed that you could find someone with his email without posting concerns about Lib’s mental health publicly. I also made the wild assumption that had he been a friend you would have his email address.

I regret my rancorous reply from yesterday as I don’t usually hijack threads with naked insults. I meant to note simply that Lib remains Lib. I haven’t noticed a change in his demeanor, and his tendencies have remained constant. I would ask you Esprix, where you find the dividing line between asshole and mental patient?

A fair number of long time posters seem to take pains to excuse Lib for acting like an asshole, presumably because you think he has gone off his rocker. I can only hope for the same indulgence if I turn into a flaming prick.

“IF?”

Sorry. Sometimes a straight line simply can not be passed up–regardless that it has no validity.

There’s a difference between “intrigued” and an all out pile on, which seems to be happening here. What exactly is the problem?

Well, I guess this isn’t gonna get closed. I know that the mods have a choice, that closing is not automatic upon request. It’s not turning out as bad as I feared yesterday.

And we got a very nice thumbnail description of modern libertarianism fromLHoD, so I suppose it’s not all bad.

Anyway, Liberal, thanks for the detail. I still think it’s going to bring you grief, the word just doesn’t mean that anymore. You may, of course, attempt to redefine it single handed; I doubt you’ll have too much luck with it. As others have said, it was very thoughtful of you not to make us get used to a new nickname!

No worries, I couldn’t have resisted either.

Damn straight. I’m a rich bastard fighting to keep every damn penny of that $12,000 I earned last year.

Do I get to self-righteously pigeonhole your political philosophy and impugn your motives now?

You call this a pile-on? You must be new here. This is about two degrees removed from a flirt thread, by Pit standards.

Nice to hear you’re doing well, Lib. Sometimes it does seem as if you’ve got other things troubling you. Haven’t seen much of the old Lib that used to post threads about the horrors of salted watermellon around these days.

High time, I say, that people start to reclaim this word and this political, nay, moral philosophy.

[…stunned by supportive words from Apos…] Why, thank you, sir!

WaterJ, I haven’t done salted watermelon recently, but I did learn just the other day that the Danish monarchy is the oldest in Europe.

Regarding Daniel’s criticism of modern libertarianism, it pretty much doesn’t make any sense. I can tell the difference between my body and my car. The ownership of one led to the ownership of the other. But I wish I were as wealthy as he has decided I am.

I’d bet you would if he said he was a Marxist.

I’m thinking about changing my name to Glutton.
