License plates in car commercials

Whenever I see a car commercial on TV I’m immediately distracted by the fact that they disguise the license plate to look like the rest of the vehicle. They actually paint the tag the same color as the rest of the car so you don’t see it. This seems to be protocol among all car manufacturers because there’s seldom a car commercial that airs with no tag at all.
At some point they must’ve concluded that the painted over tag poses less of a distraction than the non-tag or regular tag. Has anybody else taken notice to this?
