life expectancy, country vs city dwellers.

Any statisctics on who lives longer, people living in country or city?

The definitions of “city” and “country” can be pretty flexible. One way to answer your question is to look at life expectancy for individual counties (in the US). This blog links to a paper that looked at how life expectancy changes with race and location across the US, and has some interesting maps that show (to my eye, anyway) that the answer isn’t “yes” or “no”, but clearly depends on several factors not linked with urban/rural differences. The maps show areas (e.g. the South, Appalachia) with the lowest life expectancies and the Northern Plains in the highest life expectancy group. Life expectancies do seem to be higher in urban areas - certainly in the Northeast and in the Southern California area. But it’s hard to pick out places like St. Louis and Cincinnati as having distinctly higher life expectancies than the surrounding, more rural, counties.

If you’re really interested, the blog also links to the spreadsheet with the county-level life expectancy data.

Thank you for that info. I will check it out today.
