life on the time zone line

Are there any people whose property is crossed by a time zone line? How does that impact life? What about those who have to commute daily over a time zone line?
If there aren’t such people, are there laws that prohibit time zone lines from crossing property?

Don’t think it impacts life much at all. The timezone line between eastern and central runs just east of Chicago. The line actually dodges here and there allowing some border cities in Indiana to be on central but otherwise it’s not very far away. It almost certainly runs through people’s property.

I suppose it’s just one of those things you get used to and adjust for.

I remember reading about a restaurant in Indiana where the zone crossed through. One side was 1 hour ahead of the other side.

It could get pretty confusing with appointments and scheduling.

Hey, that restaurant could be a pretty good idea… Put the entrance on one side, and the exit on the other: “Our service is so fast, you’ll leave before you come in”.

Seriously, folks who live very near/on a line probably just ignore it, and go by the time of the nearest big city. Time zones are a purely arbitrary human invention, remember.

What??! This shatters my whole belief system. I don’t know what I am going to do. Everything I believed in is being crushed by the SDMB.

Evolution is a fact. (Who knew?)
The Earth is round. (Does it bounce too?)
Bill Gates isn’t give away copies of Windows, Office or any of his money.
And now this.
Next you’ll probably tell me that fire, water, earth, and air aren’t the four basic elements of the universe. (Yeah right)

The South Shore commuter line runs from Chicago to South Bend, Indiana. South Bend is in the Eastern time zone, while the rest of the line west to Chicago* is in the Central zone. This results in such apparent absurdities as trains leaving South Bend at 9:05am and arriving at the next station at 8:26am. Fun!
*Hijack: as a resident of Chicago, it feels really odd to type “west to Chicago”! Being that most of metropolitan Chicago is to some degree west of the Loop, including 11 of the 13 commuter rail lines, a commute into downtown or into the city in general almost universally involves heading east. A common joke in giving directions is “head east until your hat floats.” The South Shore line is about the only significant place where that’s not true.

There are a few towns I know of (I started out remembering Flin Flon, and was reminded of Lloydminster) that fall on a time zone line, but they usually cheat one way or another. See here for a few examples.

Years ago, when daylight-saving time was a local option in Saskatchewan, there were several towns quite a way from the Alberta border that opted out, so the time zone line ran straight down except for narrow strips connecting each of those towns to Alberta.

Quoth winky99:

No, no, no, those are the four basic elements of the Earth! The rest of the Universe is made out of a fifth element, ether. Sheesh, the things we have to go through in our fight against ignorance…

Doesn’t the line run between Pierre and East Pierre Sout Dakota.

Tell that to Michaelson and Morley. Or you can just find a bottle of it and add it to your whiskey. Knock you off the horse you rode in on!

As the official (and only as far as I can tell) resident of South Dakota on this board I can tell you that it is Pierre and Fort Pierre, South Dakota…

To answer your question, yes, the Missouri River is the boundary line between the two towns with Pierre being CST and Fort Pierre, MST.

I spent a summer in Pierre working an internship and when the bars close in Pierre a migration take place to Fort Pierre for another hour of drinking. 'Course the local PD knows this and on weekend nights basically wait on the Pierre side of the bridge with pens and citation books at the ready.

Silly me I meant that
