Lighted Paintings and other Art

As I furnish my new apartment (in a surprising tasteful manner, at least for a single 30-something male), my question turns to artwork (which could easily blow the tastefulness).
Some thoughts, please [cost is a bit of a consideration]:
1.) Lighted paintings - those that have LEDs embedded in them (e.g. Brooklyn-Bridge-at-night scene with green LEDs on the bridge, yellow LEDS as streetlights, red LEDs on the building tops…)
I like them, but are they the 00’s (null’s) versions of the 80’s Velvet Elvises, or acceptable in a funky sort of way?
2.) Thomas Kinkade has been dealt with (harshly) before on this board…however, I do like a few of his paintings, particularly those with dabs of gold paint that stand out and sparkle (e.g. a few individual leaves in a fall scene). Assuming finding one at a reasonable price (not that easy, but)…
a.) Would it instantly brand me as a uncultured yahoo?
b.) Are special spot lights required to bring out the sparkles?
3.) OK, so it seems the Teeming Millions have decided that Starving Artists sales aren’t cool, and that Galleries are rip-offs. Well, any good suggestions as to where to find that quality art at good prices? When I was a student at a Art/Engineering school (The Cooper Union - as an Engineer, of course), I don’t remember any art-sales happening, although I certainly remember crashing many an exhibit opening night to scarf up free wine and cheese.

Buy what you like, man. That’s what “art” is all about. Me, personally, I have different thoughts on the lighted pictures and T. Kinkaide, but it’s not my apartment.

If you like a picture, go for it!

My personal favorite is Maxfield Parrish.

Have you checked out http://www.barewalls.com, they have a great selection.

Good luck!
