Lighten-Up A Dark PDF Scanned Image?

Does Adobe Professional or some other software product have the ability to lighten-up the background of a dark pdf scanned file? I’ve tried attacking this from the other side of the coin…re-scanning with the exposure set low (i.e., to lighten), but the image came out unbalanced - half light, half not quite as dark. FYI: I lack the originals, so I only have the dark scanned images to work from.

When answering, please provide the software name and version you use. Thx!

If you’re on a Mac, it can definitely be done with Pixelmator ($30). It can also almost certainly be done with GIMP (free), though the interface isn’t very good. Is there any reason why you can’t convert it to an image format, use any number of free image editing tools to adjust the contrast and brightness, and then convert it back to PDF? Because that would be a fairly straightfoward option.

I don’t know about other software (I use Photoshop), but bear in mind that if you only want to lighten the background, you should be increasing the *contrast. *In Photoshop you’d be using the “levels” function. There should be something comparable in other software.
