Has anyone ever toyed with the idea of installing a like button option on individual posts. I got spoiled by it with facebook.
Another month, another Like button inquiry. Please no. Keep those abominations away.
Agreed. One reason I like this board is because of the lack of avatars and like buttons. Keep it real, homies! Like old skool, knowwhatimsayin?
More seriously, I’ll rephrase. This board is a bit of a throwback, and I like it that way. No need to have animated gif avatars, or to make this a Facebook clone. This board has its own identity, and I’d like it to stay that way.
I had a strange feeling this was going to be the case.
In that case you won’t feel bad if I join in the dissent? Honestly, most of the more “content and debate” boards I’ve seen add them died by them as well. It became more about rallying your wing than adding good information and thought. It always struck me as a Rush Limbaugh “Ditto Head” (to unfairly use a conservative example - those of us on the other side can be equally guilty) sort of thing. I just don’t see where it aides the kinds of discussions we have here.
I concur with my esteemed three-month-earlier-join-date colleague. No like button, please. I just don’t think I could take it.
My experience is like button = I’m as big an idiot as you are.
If you like someone’s post enough, write your own post praising it and perhaps offering your own opinion.
If you like it, but not enough to do anything more than click a single button, what are we really losing by missing out on learning that?
Like.
(ノಠ益ಠ)ノ彡┻━┻
I would like this post if I had a button to do so.
mmm
Could I make a request? Can we stop countering every request for a a change with WE DON’T WANT ANIMATED AVATARS!!! It’s silly to always jump to the worst case scenario and has nothing to do with this OP’s request.
As a Facebook newbie, I concur. I was shocked to see that people “LIKE” the news of the death of a friend’s mother. Seriously?
I really don’t care one way or the other. But I will say this: If you’re bothered by something so innocuous as a “like” button, I’d say you need to pull that stick out of your ass.
I’ll concede to kopeks point. Keep them out of GD, but anywhere else, I couldn’t care less.
I would just request that if we do (which we won’t) get a “like” button we should also get a “Don’t like” button as well.
I would say the opposite.
If there’s one plus about having a “like” button (and that’s an “if” there), it would be the possibility that it would cut down on annoying posts that do nothing more than agree with previous posts. Such posts lengthen threads, force additional scrolling and sometimes reading, and add nothing that couldn’t be accomplished with an unobstrusive “like” button.
I’m not sure it would really work, though. Some people feel the world really needs to see in full text that they agree with something that someone else said, and/or just like feeling that they’re expressing themselves.
In any event, not a big deal either way.
My gorge rises at the mention of the concept of “being spoiled by it with Facebook”.
Before we get the like button, we need animated avatars with sound. Loud sounds, like fingernails scraping across a chalkboard. Brightly colored animations, flashing at seizure inducing frequencies. And the standard text should be changed to everyone’s favorite comic sans. And a new “No two posts in the same color” rule.
Any chance we’ll get all this?
The first warning sign is if they install games.
Which will never happen.
This is what I had in mind. I will very often, maybe 95% of the time have an opinion on a post but have nothing to really add to it or the discussion. There are quite a few posters here whose posts I really enjoy reading and admire, likewise there are a few who I don’t like. Having a simple scale say from 1 to 5 might give posters and readers who don’t post much a little better feedback on general opinions.
Everyone objects to a like button, but no one says what their objection is exactly. Is it a religious thing?
