You do have to wonder how well the radical republicans would have accepted Lincoln’s apparent policy to go easy on the South.

They wouldn’t have liked it and would have pushed for harsher measures, but if Lincoln had insisted, they would have grudgingly gone along.

Lincoln almost certainly would have changed his policy in response to the imposition of neo-slavery, in the guides of “black codes”, by the Southern legislatures in the winter of 1865-66.
