Linux MythTV/HTPC: Tweaking Display With Modelines

Calling Bill H. and other Linux Users -

As I mentioned over in this thread, I’m just finishing building a MythTV box. In order to get the display as clear as possible, I’m curious if I can adding “Modelines” to my Xorg.conf will be on any benefit.

I’m currently using an old Radeon 7000 with the GATOS drivers. I have a vanilla Xorg.conf only changed to add the driver “radeon”, set the resolution at “800x600”, and the option under device “TVOutput” “NTSC”. There are currently no modelines.

The current display is good but not perfect. First, it is slightly shifted to the right so I get a 1/2" black bar on the left side. Second, on light colored objects I get very faint gray bars (this could of course be some sort of interference).

Will determining and adding modelines for my TV be of any value? If so, how do I go about it? I’ve read of using Powerstrip in Windows, but this would be difficult to do (ie put the card in a windows machine and try it). Any other 'nix display tweaking programs that’ll help out?

Thanks,

Mark
