lion king (stage, not movie) -- weird character breaks

First of all, The Lion King was amazing! The dancing, costumes/puppets, lighting effects, etc were great. However, there were a few things that didn’t make sense to me. (Don’t read on unless you have seen the show.) First, at the end of “I Just Can’t Wait to be King” when the guy in blue who is doing the voice and puppeteering for Zazu slides through the curtain, and he says, “Where’s my bird?!” it is very funny, but it doesn’t make sense, because the puppeteer is not a character in the show. He doesn’t exist! Then, when Mufasa is yelling at Simba about going to the dark elephant graveyard, he takes off his lion head, as if breaking character. Why? Someone please explain this, or just tell me if you agree that it’s very strange.

First off, the puppets are just bodies. The puppeteers in that show are truly ACTING, and sometimest that means that things that don’t make perfect sense have to be done.

When Zazu’s puppetteer (who by the way is dressed like Zazu’s personality, more proof that he’s meant to be looked at) speaks to the crowd, it’s just funny and fun. Everyone understands, and this is not a show that’s all about realism. Very often, you have to watch the actors anyway to appreciate the work they’re doing.

When Mufasa takes off his lion head, it’s because he needs to act. It’s an intense scene with some serious emotional shifting and force behind it, and he can’t do it with a wooden mask on while getting it across. We all know he’s portraying a lion, and it’s more important for him to be able to communicate to the audience than to remind them of that right then.

That was such a fantastic show…I’d love to see it again. I was sitting in the left aisle seat, and when that elephant came down the aisle, it “kicked” me  It was kind of neat.

That’s all I have to say. I need to watch the movie again now

When I saw the LK on stage I took the Mufasa removes head scene this way,

He takes of the head the it is symbolically his crown, which is symbolic of the responsibilites of being a king. He takes it off for a bit and he is just dad. Then he dons the crown again and the emotional weight of being king is shown to Simba.(who thinks being king will just be fun)

I don’t remember Zazu coming out with the wheres my bird bit, but then again the show has probably evolved over time. I do remember the bastard flirting with my wife.

Ok now I will describe a Disney film and you tell me which one it is.

The film starts with all the animals gathering to because a new prince is born and they all gater to view him. As the young prince grows he has a close relationship to one parent and no relationship with the other. As the prince grows he has two friends from different species. One of the friends is really funny and the other produces bad smells.
Then the parent the prince is close to dies suddenly. The basically the young prince in a montage is grown to adult hood. He gets a girlfriend an in another montage have sex. At the end of the film the prince has two children of his own and assumes his fathers place.

Now were you thinking of The Lion King or Bambi?
